18+ covers and NSFM rule

I wanted to add a cover for a 18+ OVA but then I saw the NSFM rule, and after checking other similar material, I saw pictures for 18+ MAL items are censored.
Do I have to censor the cover I want to upload for that 18+ OVA?
If yes (I hope not), why do I have to do that in the first place? Did MAL import the retarded Japanese law on obscenity? Is it not MAL's duty to design a 18+ filter for those pics you could disable in the options like everyone else does instead of enforcing a ridiculous censorship (ridiculous as in it doesn't hide anything)?

@twoego: Those rules predate the buying by a Japanese company if I believe the timestamps. But I was wrong saying they imported the "retarded Japanese law on obscenity" because those covers... are from Japanese products so they are supposed to abide by this law in the first place. Which means...

@Cladocera: You can do all of that by hiding those pictures with a filter. It's ridiculous, and hypocritical, because 1/ you are censoring 18+ material... because you want to show it to everyone? 2/ you are censoring it badly (ex: breasts are ok but not nipples? yeah, right). If you don't want minors to see inappropriate materials, you hide it by default and make it accessible to those who checked their age or a box, whatever, not pretending you have solved the issue by putting a patch on it. By hiding, I don't necessarily mean the db entries but just the pictures.

Ok, now I know what to do.

are neither family friendly, or NSFW, or what do you want to call them. There is almost no difference when you look at the thumbnails. And no, when I look at a swimsuit, I don't see boobs. Everybody (but the bigots) is laughing at the logic behind the Japanese obscenity law and for a good reason.
No issue was resolved with those rules. They are just avoiding it so they can say they did something.

Anyway, like you exposed your reasons, I will tell you one of mine: it irks me to look at a database and see a data (the cover) which is a big part of the item's identity (OVA, anime, manga, etc) being butchered to comply with the SFW crowd even though they should not look at such material in the first place. My point is that MAL fails at both ends: pleasing the NSFW and the SFW crowds.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if you had to willingly search for 18+ material to find it (they never display it in the forefront, right?). Even with the search bar, I never encountered 18+ stuff when searching for non 18+ stuff.

Yeah, quite a few images for entries were improperly censored and mistakenly approved before, but MAL mods are fixing them as they find them.

I just reported these, so they will hopefully be fixed soon. Thanks!
