I get the feeling that the mangaka has a thing for creating characters that try to drown their heartache over unrequited love by finding a new partner that loves them, but that they don't really love.

Oosawa was in love with Misao. But she loved Kurata.
Since Oosawa couldn't get together with Misao, he started going out with Chiiko.
She loves him, but it looks like he doesn't really love her. To him, she is more like a momentary relief when his heartache grows too strong.

And it is clear that he will break her heart.
