I've heard this talking point from the anti-industry crowd before, but the anime industry started falling off a cliff roughly a year before the 2008 financial crash and recession. Though the decline did coincidentally begin right when YouTube made video piracy even easier than it was in the mid-2000s with BitTorrent.

Good move. Regardless of anyone's thoughts about their limited catalogue, creating partnerships with appropriate companies is important, even if only to stop them from going to other sites. It reinforces MAL's position as the primary database. It'll also surely attract more people to the site who might casually like anime but have never thought about the fact that databases like this might exist.

Sure, if you're one of those people who watch stuff that have score of 8.50 upwards only, it's a nice thing to see otherwise, that's some bullshit. You'd never know if something is good or not if you don't watch it first. Scores lies to you. ALWAYS.

If you have some examples, I'm all ears. I don't go by just scores. If I like the description and cover, I'll give it a try. However, if I am looking for something to watch I look at MAL suggestions and the score. If it's above a 6, then I'm game. If is less, then chances are pretty high it's not going to be any good.
