Favorite Thriller Anime Series?
| Peak for peak, Kaiji (first season only). Intense pretty much from start to finish with high stakes. Although the games itself is a simplistic idea, the results and cliffhangers kept me entertained. The mentality of Kaiji's up and down moments through his journey was captured well without being excessive. The other series that had this level of a fascinating thriller was the first 25-26 episodes (can't remember if the 26th is a recap) of Death Note (first arc). If it wasn't for the second arc, I might have given Death Note the edge. |

| Higurashi. Not only because the plot was well woven and intricate, covering a lot of different areas and topics you don't see often, but first and foremost for the characters and "feel" of the show. I have never before in anime or outside this medium seen Thriller fused with and seamlessly flow back and forth between Slice of Life downtime. How can a show be so tense, eerie, or even exhilarating, and then just cozy, comfy, and nostalgic feeling all in one episode? There are gruesome moments both in psychological paranoia so you're almost put in the POV of a schizophrenic not sure what you've or heard or who to ever trust if anyone, as well as physical violence/body horror (fear of the changes to or what's in one's own body), but in my opinion the show shines just in how lived in the village of Hinamizawa feels. The scale of the enemy and challenge facing the protagonists is out of this world, the pervasiveness of the atmosphere covers the whole show, and nothing feels quite like it. A small group of friends that are actually fun and interesting to watch in their own right just hang out are pitted against ... the mentality of a whole town? A murder conspiracy? Some kind of organized plot by a government or rural religious cultists? Something supernatural? An alien or otherworldy force? Each other? You really get to experience a symphony of emotions watching it and feel like you're a fly on the wall to this incredible battle the characters are locked in. Plus, props for having a school setting for a good chunk of the show and not making any one of the entire cast of characters feel generic or dull. |

| I'm just gonna choose from the list because i've seen a lot, but there are some listed i haven't seen either. If we are talking about the genre only, for example what anime i think has the best thriller, then i'd say Higurashi or Steins;Gate. As a whole though (without focusing only on the thriller genre), Zankyou no Terror. I wanted to say Shinsekai Yori too but it's not marked as thriller for some reason? |

| Too bad it was only possible to vote for one show. Chose Psycho-Pass but also loved East of Eden and Erased. Death Note is a bit neh because it jumped the shark like Dexter and ended with a lame finale. |
