Silver Spoon? Guy in agricultural school. It's not really academic, but more practical application based.

Honey and Clover is about university students at an art school and it's very well-regarded

Nodame Cantabile. Romance is probably the main focus, but academics still play a large part in the story. It's about students at a music conservatory.

Moyashimon! About an agricultural school. The main character can see single celled organisms.

My Little Monster is an anime about a girl studying rigorously for an exam.

Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo has a mild focus on creative academics like (script) writing, (manga) drawing, and (game) design; the main character spends half the anime learning about game design, entering competitions and making presentations.

Try Classroom of the Elite. It is not exactly studying for grades but it is a part of it. It is about a school on where students live by merit. The students are divided into classes A to D based on their placement test, class A being the top crop and class D being the ones who barely passed but this can still change based on their performance as a class. The show is very enjoyable in my opinion and you'll also get a pretty good main protagonist.
