It's been awhile since I've seen this series and I've always wondered something and I can't remember if it was ever addressed in the series

My question is, if Madara initially chose to pair up with Natsume so that he would be there when Natsume dies in order to claim the Book of Friends, why does he constantly go out of his way to save Natsume from deathly situations, rather than just sit back and claim the book?

This is an incredibly late response, but to answer your question, why Madara decided to stay by Natsume's side is never clearly stated, but we're led to assume that he's chosen to be with him because:

1) Madara was once by Reiko's side and sees her in Natsume.

2) Madara sees Natsume's spiritual potential.

and

3) Madara genuinely cares for Natsume.

Even though Madara constantly states that he's only with Takashi in order to attain the Book of Friends after his death, it's made obvious that this is only a pretense. What's more, we're led to believe that even Natsume knows Madara isn't by his side for the Book of Friends.

Basically, Madara is a tsundere. He worries about and cares for Natsume, so he decided to stay by his side in order to protect him until his future, certain death.
