What is the appeal of St Seiya?

Can anyone please explain to me why Saint Seiya is so popular? I don't hate the saga, I just don't understand its popularity.

The artwork is pretty awesome, but the story feels okay to me. Can anyone explain why it's considered stellar?

Nostalgia, the Super Sentai setup, galaxy-sized explosions, the characters, and the campiness among other things. Though, I'm more familiar with it as Knights of the Zodiac, and I mostly remember it for its awesome opening. It's pure 80s cheese and it's really fun in that regard.

Well, speaking from my own perspective, I like the Greek mythology behind the story as well as the celestial powers the Saints possess in relation to their constellations. I also love the character designs. The armors of the Saints are very cool and I like the hairstyles. The biggest problem with the series is it just doesn't age well in regards to its animation and the quality of its fights. The movements can be dragged out. And there can be a lot of monologue, dialogue, and gestures as the characters are fighting. Which is a shame since I can very well see this anime being one of my top favorites.

Saint Seiya is what happens when you mix Rocky, sugarcoated traditionalism and theology for children, successful toy selling, and some good-old ultraviolence.

Also, notice how this show was so successful in Catholic countries (not just Latin America, but also Spain, Italy and France, among others). I wonder why...
