That's the future, telling us that they got married. Those two people inside the circle showing their backs and a bright light in front of them is Shouko and Ishida walking towards the altar.

Honestly, if they wanted to do that, they could've used a little better pics, not that 1pixel circle...

That's how I see it and if you imagine the scene it actually looks beautiful. I rarely see a straightforward romance on animes, especially Japanese ones. So this is also a way to do it; and they'd be like "let it be as mysterious as possible and let them speculate." And since there's no clear explanation of what that little image could mean; everything can be possible.

Yeah, but that everyting can only mean ONE thing, since no other romance pairing was hinted, so why not just go ahead and confirm it 100%?

Not confirming it 100% but clearly implying it is nothing new to the Japanese people. Most romance animes are like that. They leave you in a cliffhanger and wants you to speculate. Then you'll feel self satisfaction after thinking "yeah, that's what definitely happened" even if there's no official confirmation behind your speculation.

Isn't it more the thought of "there's light at the end of the tunnel" ?
The show is implying that the 2 maincharacters both have very low downs which they don't share with anyone. Now that they understand each other's problems they can walk towards the light, together..
Or something like that..

Just my thought of the ending, tho, might be completely off lol

Did no one else think that he died? And at the end he's following the light to the end of the tunnel.

Yes that was my association too. Looked like the end of the tunnel (life) and he's walking towards the light (heaven)...but...i guess it doesnt make sense that he died after we've seen him interact with so many people after the accident. I suppose they are both alive.

I too was left wondering if he died. He is finally happy and sees the faces of the ones he cares about then all the sound fades away and we see this tiny little circle and hear only his heartbeat. There are two figures in the circle and they are moving up and down slightly. Then his heartbeat stops playing and the circle turns into light and we get a transition to the ending screen.

And I mean, this is probably reading too far into it but when you are crying, especially hard like that, your heart rate spikes up so realistically theres no way that the heartbeat was his actual heartbeat otherwise.

To add to this, what would be the last thing to happen before his death would be nishimiya's dream that he was going to die. After that we get a pretty unrealistic scene of a man coming out of a coma and somehow having the strength to escape the hospital (which is apparently empty) and run down to the bridge where he tells nishimiya about a dream he had that for some reason we the audience don't see. Everything from here after works out incredibly well. Everyone makes up and is happy and he finally gets over his issues. He even sees the faces of the other two kids from elementary school as kids which makes no sense otherwise.

The only thing really giving me hope that it might not be the case is that the figures do have the rough height different of the main two characters and kind of appear to be walking. Not sure what the point of the heartbeat at the end is if thats the case though. Ugh I hate vagueness, I want closure.

i think it's just a visual representation of deafness, you can kinda see a little inside the circle but you are not very sure of what you are watching, like deaf people can kinda hear something but they are not very sure of what they are hearing.
