Yukio, an indirect protagonist/antagonist?

What I've noticed is that, despite having significant character development for Rin, Yukio seems to also be of note - he is one other character that the anime seems to focus deeply on.

Shiemi, Bon, Koneko, Shima... these characters all go through some character development, but at least not to the extent of Yukio. This almost makes me feel that Yukio is developing to either be a co-Protagonist or Antagonist - discovering his hatred/dislike for himself, his need to grow out of his shell, dismissing his own achievements and developing a sense of arrogance to hide his insecurity and burden (all these pent up emotions for the demons to take advantage of)

What are your thoughts?
