The anime that gave birth to strong female protagonists in the medium. Despite its episodic nature and being over 3 decades old, I found the series to be very entertaining. I liked the animation, though it was a little iffy here and there. I loved the premise where each planet they go to has its own special culture, giving the anime lots of variety. The action is also great, where our two female leads rely on skill rather than super abilities to overcome their trials. While it is usually scenes where the go in guns blazing, there are some episodes where they must act covertly, like spies and secret agents. This made the anime a lot more interesting, and I wish more modern action anime would try to execute stealth operations rather than all out fights.
The best aspect of the series is the Lovely Angels themselves, Kei and Yuri. Both characters have very distinct personalities that make them very notable and interesting to watch. But the one thing that I really praise the anime for is the chemistry between the two leads. The creator did an excellent job with the synergy between Kei and Yuri to ensure that they share the spotlight evenly and that neither character ever overshadows the other. Kei is fun to watch, but having Yuri along makes things even better and vice versa. They compliment each other so well that the anime wouldn't be the same if one of them was removed. The two work as a pair. Even if one is alone, the other will be close by.
For an anime with female protagonists wearing revealing uniforms, the fan service was just right. Not too much, not too little, just perfect. Same goes for the comedy. Never too much to take away from the mood, but just enough to give the watcher a smile. Another thing I like is that, despite them being women, their gender is almost never used as an excuse when dealing with their cases. If they fail or make a mistake, the excuse is never because "they are women". SOCIAL JUSTICE!
Dirty Pair was a great watch. I'm watching the OVAs right now and the quality of the stories are even better than the TV series. So glad I watched this. I never thought that I could find an anime where two HUMAN girls can cause more destruction than Lina Inverse, lol. |
