Well that was pointless. Didn't really need to see a dude fuck an impoverished kid while giving her an incurable disease. Prick!

[cue otaku that defend the man's actions]

You're absolutely right. Giving that girl that disease was a little bit too cruel for my tastes. There is no way to condone such behavior and it made me very uncomfortable.

As for it being "pointless", well I do not agree.
I believe there were two reasons for the incurable disease but in order to understand it you have to look beyond that one single story and look at the collection as a whole.
The main theme between "Womb" is decay. Everything, from the city to the people, is decaying either physically, emotionally, or mentally. If you recall the man was rather affluent within the story but the disease was to show that even he was decaying on the inside (much like the rest of the characters)

I also believe the reason the disease was even included within that story was to it could emphasize her belief that he was "God". God not only has the ability to give life but also to take it away. He gave her life and he also took it away.

Again, there is no way to justify his actions and I think that's how Mohiro wanted it. If you recall the story was told from the girl's perspective so there was no way to understand his feelings completely, but that kind of thing is normal in everyday life. We never fully understand a person's motives behind their actions until they are explained and most of the time we have to try and think of something on our own.

I'm excited to see that someone has at least read this story. I think it's a great piece of work that deserves a little more recognition. (If you can get passed some of risque themes within the collection.)

That was a good post cancan31, I'm just more cynical and jaded of the manga medium these days, but I cant disagree with your ideas. Still uncomfortable reading, and not in a Bradherley's Coach kind of way where the narrative and themes in it has a digestible purpose, but just plain old disturbing, for me anyway.

To me it was just too much. Too disturbing and absolutely too graphic. cancan31's post is good. It's not a "pointless" chapter but for me the point of it isn't interesting enough to weigh up for the disgust this made me feel... I guess it made me feel something, so at least that's an accomplishment, but I can't praise things simply because they're uncomfortable.

One of my favorite mangas, nijigahara holograph, has similar disturbing themes at one point in the manga. But at least Asano Inio didn't make it into full out "sex scenes".

3 more years is better than dying in a few hours. The girl got love and she enjoyed the rest of her life. There were no problems in this story and was not pointless.
The legal age of consent in Japan is 13, so shota is totally legal in Japan. In some western countries shota might be considered child porn.
