Yes it is possible if:
_you have another partner or your best friend has another partner
_you are interested in another partner or your best friend is interested in another partner
_you are asexual or your best friend is asexual
_your best friend doesn't like you physically or you don't like your best friend physically
_your best friend doesn't like your personality or you don't like your best friend personality
_you were together in the past and it didn't work out
_you cannot be together for reasons of greater cause such as a long distance
_you grew up together since a really young age and you were exposed to the Westermarck effect
If you find your best friend attractive in personality or physically you are lying to yourself by just not making a move because you are scared of refusal or negative consequences in your relations and this is very common.
There is also the sad condition of being "friendzoned" when you would like to move "closer" and can't and find yourself stuck in a limbo between the fear of losing the friendship altogether and the frustration of not being able to have more out of it.

the existance of queer people undermines the premise of this question
but then again is the cishets that always have these weirdnesses and complications
as much as its obvious that yeah of course they can be friends, ngl so many of yall make problems out of nothing, cishets are just obsessed with their idenitity and must prove it all the time by being so fkn weird about opposite gender relationships
