Do you believe anime villains should have a sympathetic background?

What about Dio Brando? People always bring him up as poster child for the villain-for-the-sake-of-being-evil-type character.

But sometimes you can assume certain background about characters even if the character doesn`t have full-on-flashbacks.. For example, in Dio`s case, you could argue that Dio`s broken family, alcoholic father, and poverty all combined made him what he is today.

No.

I mean, its great and all, but its not necessary, I mean.

Yuuki Terumi is my favorite villain, yet he does not have a single reason other than he wants to have fun. His troll ways are just awesome.
Kyubey has no sympathetic background, yet he has a reason for doing what he does.

On the other hand, villains with a sympathetic background is character development, and would be considered better objectively. Of course, this is not always the case.

It just depends on the theme of the anime, and what it wants to convey.

I just want a villain who is confident in themselves and their intentions.

With sympathetic villains, the idea is to make their actions understandable, not to try and obsolve them of any wrongdoing and whitewash them (lolObito)

Plain evil is just too lame, so yeah it's needed

IMO I don't really mind, just as long as they play their part, it's aggravating when the villains don't even try to be evil or when they're easily brushed off.

Depends on how evil they are.

Lol I suppose it depends on what kind of villain they are.

Some are insane, some are the anti-hero, some are purely selfish and power hungry, some have just lost faith in the world.

I think all should have a back story, but only anti-heros and those who lose faith in the world should have a sympathetic background. With the other two, I don't think they deserve any sort of justification for what they did.. (ahem Lucy)

Of course, there are plenty of other types.

Not really. Those with a complicated background are more interesting, though. Mystery, mystery, my darlings! :/

Really depends on the show. Villains from DBZ aren't overly complex characters as its not an overly complex show and that's fine.
