We've watched things like Sailor Moon and Card Captor Sakura but I'm not sure what to try next. Dubbed is a must because she finds it hard to keep up with the text and absorb what's happening at the same time.

I briefly tried Fair Tail but found it had a little too much adult content for my niece at the moment.

Does anyone know of anything else that might be suitable?

Kodocha! - Best anime for that requisite, hands down. Perfect for all ages; it's fun, zippy & hard not to love.

There are the obvious choices like Pokemon, but that's a pretty rubbish anime. I think you are better off with quality work like the Studio Ghibli collection - start with Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle, in my opinion.

If you want a longer running series, Digimon is actually quite good as a kids show. It has actual story progression and drama, unlike Pokemon (I really wish it was good).

While it isn't anime, I highly recommend Avatar: the Last Airbender. You can read my review to see if it's for you and your niece.

Kill me baby! It's cute and requires very little concentration.

Mahou Shoujotai Arusu - story is a bit dark but aimed at her age group; MC is eight, I believe
Angelic Layer - but see my comments here

I'll also suggest you see how she does with Chi's Sweet Home. It's subtitled, but the dialogue is very simple. There's a playlist for all 104 three-minute episodes at YouTube.

Usagi Drop is really not suitable for a young child, especially if she has any insecurities about her family situation. Plus there is the illegitimacy issue which is usually not within the ken of nine-year-olds.

I'm going to probably check that out myself. Never heard of it, but that episode count may take a while to get to.

Maybe she likes some sweet slice of life animes? But I am not sure which ones are dubbed and which ones are not.
