Might be on the wrong section but here goes anyways.

I'been getting mood for collecting manga again and one of the series i'm thinking about trying out is Higurashi. It's a very long series overall but because the series is cut into little pieces i was wondering whether each of the arc's work as it's own thing.

If i would buy the first two volumes for instance would i get a "one whole story" or does it end with a cliffhanger that is followed on the second arc or how does the series work?

There's probably a overall story through out the series but can it also be enjoyed on arc basis?

Essentially i want to leave the door open and not to get to that point that i feel like i wasted money if quit collecting the series halfway.

Some arcs feel more self contained than others.
