I absolutely wasn't aware of it first time I watched it. Hint: Pay close attention to Tsuruga Academy. @Sora, I think I see what you are talking about in epi 3. Good catch, I missed it as well the first time. thanks, the site is saved, will check them out later. |

Observations after the first 12: Episode 1: Some things I had forgotten about the first episode is how quickly they drop you into the story and the world of Mahjong. It helps out the shows pacing in the end, but I can see how it might be a bit abrasive to new comers to the show. I definitely think new comers should start off with at the least the first 2 or 3 episodes before making any decision to stick with it. Also, I don't know if we ever see again Saki act quite like she does in the opening moments when she brings Suga a lunch from the ladies cafeteria. Those annoyed looks and "don't use me for stuff like this" remarks kind of contrast from her sort of dazed and submissive attitude we get used to seeing. Episode 2: Episode 3: Sora or someone is going to have to give me more clues to this thing I'm missing or something, I didn't see it. I love the Chibi stuff in this show and with exception of Wai Wai, I think I love the Chibi faces next to their scores the most. Episode 7: Ugh, I forgot about the bitch coach for Kazekoshi. She's awful, over the top and doesn't really add much. The only good thing that comes from her is the end of the episode, with Mihoko's speech and our first glimpse of her other eye. That scene gets the blood pumping for me. Episode 8: LET'S DO IT! Let's win a Mahjong tournament. Episode 9: Were the rolling dice 3D before this episode? I've seen this exact face before in other anime. Could someone point me to some examples? Episode 11: Possibly my favorite moment of the show: Hmm, Mahjong or cuddle with Saki? No contest. Episode 12: As started last episode, any subtlety with Yuri really starts to erode in episode 12 and wearing Yuri Goggles can start to cause blindness. The Banana gag, Mihoko getting flustered with Hisa's remark about her pretty eye, everyone else getting flustered by everything Mihoko does, Touka getting very flustered by Hajime's advancements. If you're adding Saki Doujin to read after the show, The Moon, the Flower and the Star is well known Hajime x Touka one. |

Episode 1 I didn’t think the way they presented the game was abrasive at all. Actually, it made the game more exciting and interesting. Saki was submissive later because Haramura in epi 3 put her in her place after no umbrella was offered in epi 1. Episode 2 That reminds me, going to see the Hobbit next Monday. Woo hoo. Episode 3 As Sora said focus on the Tsuruga Academy, then think coupling of Momoko and Yumi. Ninja/stealth style Momo. Episode 9 Episode 12 So many tears and all of the blushing. We were just missing a few nosebleeds. |

Episode 1: Well, not just Mahjong but the story itself sort of gets right into it, including some of the early drama with Saki/Nodoka, even though we barely know them yet. Episode 3: Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Nope! I don't get it. Episode 9: No, this is more dead on. Like, just exactly that face on a different character. I know I've seen it. Episode 12: You know, now that I think about it, I don't think there are any nosebleeds in Saki. But I don't know if any other show has Knee Blushing. |

That face... maybe Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan? Reminds me of that somehow. |

You know season 2 is airing in January 6, 2014? It's called Saki: Zenkoku-hen, it's a sequel to where they left off on season one not the Side A season. Also, I finished the whole season first and Achiga-hen, it was great, the joygasm of watching lesbians play mahjong is incredible ._. |

I finished episode 11 earlier today. The mahjong is getting more interesting now, I wasn't completely sold on it earlier. Also that sleeping scene was so cute, probably my favorite thing when it comes to yuri, too. Finally some Kodo.. Koromo screen-time too, she is adorable. I was also pleasantly surprised to hear my all-time favorite seiyuu in this show (this char), I didn't know she was in it. |

Wow, did not know that was Akari at all. And yes episode 11 has the sugariest feel good scene ever. As for Koromo Adorable is certainly one of her traits. |

I'm doing such a bad job at getting this finished last week. Let's hope tomorrow isn't too hectic (Christmas Eve, no, that would never be hectic). Notes Episode 13: One of the moments in the show is where Fujita downplays Koromo's talent before we ever even get to see her play. Not the best way to build UP the drama. A blink and you'll miss it moment is when in the preview Nodoka says she wants to stalk Saki in more or less words. And Yikes. Episode 14: I love Stealth Momo. I forgot how much I love how she talks too. With her also brings the part of the show where magical powers really start to kick in and in her case, seemingly work outside of Mahjong. Episode 15: I love Momo. Momo loves ya. BEHOLD THE FACE OF DEATH, EVIL AND WANTON DESTRUCTION. No more wai wai. The second ED really can't compare, though it has its moments. Episode 16: Two notable things about this episode, in my opinion. 1.) Wahaha is starting to warm up into full force. 2.) There is a hilarious not so subtle moment where Yumi makes a comparison the situation to a surf pulling back to a tsunami. Cue picture of Yumi in a bathing suit. Episode 17: One of the few things that doesn't leave a very good taste in my mouth is in this episode where Koromo purposely lowers her score so that Kana ends up with exactly 0 points. She could have ended the match and won it all there. I know it's part of her personality and everything but this is before Saki even starts to make a come back and I think it kind of sucks the accomplishment out of it when she does. Again, sort of bad drama building. Episode 19: Episode 20: I love Koromo's nonchalant chibi arm riding. Other than that and some good swim suit shots, you can tell this episode was really stretched thin to meet the length requirement. Episode 21: MihokoxRisa really starts to warm up now. Episode 22: This starts what has to be one of the best match ups in the series. Risa, Saki, Momo and Tomoki Sawamura. Risa's so cute when she ties her hair up. Also, one of the best Wahaha(haha)s around the 17:30 mark. Momo and Yumi are adorable and I think at this point it's hard to say their relationship is anything but an actual relationship. |

Wahaha, I finished episode 16 recently. Koromo keeps on keeping on. I wonder where I can sign up to take her home! If she was my friend she would get all the patting she'd want. Finally got to see her play some mahjong too! I left off in the middle of a game so I'm sure I haven't seen all the good stuff yet. I can't really get over how much yuriness is in this show hiding behind every corner. It makes it quite a treat to keep watching. Stealth Momo is incredibly cute, I love characters like her, and it just makes me really happy to know she finally has someone she can be happy with. More watching another time. |

HOME STRETCH! Episode 23: Risa/Mihoko/Touka/Yumi is another good match up combination. Individuals are over as fast as they began. Not much else to say. Episode 24: Wahaha is now at critical mass. Hajime is pretty cute with her hair down. Checking 3 different sources, Crunchyroll included, at around the 17:30 mark, I have both Saki and Nodoka saying back to back "Huh, I never said I wasn't going!" It doesn't make any sense, Saki should be saying something different. Does anyone have alternative dialog? Hisa is cute. Mihoko is cute. Episode 25: I think Hisa's real plan all along was to get everyone in one place so she could see what everyone looks like naked. It's about 30 seconds into the episode before she tells everyone to hit the baths. Nice to see Touka is good at something, too bad the show isn't about ping pong. Wahaha sleeps like Yuuki does. YumixMomo totally get busted in the bath together. The end credits to this final episode are such a freaking tease, showing us so many things to come with so many new characters. Keep in mind this was back in 2009, a good 4-5 year gap between the premiere of season 2 a little over a week away. Still, if Achiga-hen is anything to go by, the continuity seems surprisingly good, especially in how some of the power previews were animated. And now for something a little special. When I first watched the series, I wasn't able to find the picture drama any where. When I started for this thread, I decided it was time to update my current rips to something a little bit higher in quality and this time the Picture Dramas were included. They're short but not everyone may feel like watching them. Here's a brief summary on each of them. Picture Dramas: 1: This takes place during episode 5 when Yuuki and Nodoka are trying to see a shooting star. They wait in the bath and end up talking about nonsense. Yuuki uses her "breast reading" (groping) skills on Nodoka to determine that Nodoka is secretly in love. Cue Saki coming in to find them in an awkward position. This results in an embarrassed Nodoka explaining to Saki that it isn't what it looks like and that there's no way she's fallen in love with Saki. Saki wasn't there for that part of the conversation and Yuuki never mentioned any names, so there was no context for Nodoka to blurt this out. Oops. Fortunately Saki seems characteristically confused. This episode is probably NSWF. Lots of nudity in this one. Although, it's really a Barbie World. 2: The story of how Miharu (gray short haired Kazekoshi girl) got her glasses. Now we're talking! Also, maybe a little bit of MiharuxKana, or at least high levels of admiration. That would be nice, to not have to worry about Kana being lonely. Mihoko rocking the shades. I think she's paying too much if she buys anything with two lenses, though. 3: Tomoki (glasses from Ryuumonbuchi) tells her story to Koromo. It turns out she wasn't scouted out for her skills in Mahjong. She didn't even play it before joining the club. She was an Online gamer who spent every waking minute playing an RTS and was the top ranked Japan player. Might explain why she's seemingly so bad at Mahjong but what do I know? She didn't even bother wearing pants back in the day. 4: Something I forgot to mention back during the episode where Tsuruga Academy is at the beach is the small cameo of Wahaha's van. Something I knew from watching Achiga-hen is that Satomi can drive. Badly. This the story of them getting to that beach and the near death experience they all shared on the way there. 5: Yumi and Momo share some casual time together alone. It's never officially called a date but how would anyone get that idea to begin with?. 6: Kana has triplet sisters (also shown briefly in the festival episode). Mihoko goes to help her take care of them on their birthday. 7: A year before Yuuki and Nodoka enroll at Kiyosumi, they are seen thinking about their future. Yuuki suggest Nodoka could just become Yuuki's wife and Nodoka very non-nonchalantly says that's might be feasible idea. Really. She even talks about an article she read about the artificial ways two people of the same sex can have children together. So there you go, YuukixNodoka fans. Saki also makes a cameo in at the end of this episode. It's always nice to see Saki in Saki. Well, that about does it for me. I got to get next month's spotlight prepared. Everyone who is still watching, feel free to keep using this thread. But don't use it to talk about series 2 episodes when they start airing. That would just get crazy confusing. We'll do something else for that if need be. |

I'm very late on this but I just downloaded it now. I watched ep 1 and there are some elements bothering me, if someone can clear any of them up, well I'd be very grateful: - Doesn't the blond guy make this anime into a kind of harem? - Don't you think the anime would be more enjoyable having some minor knowledge of mahjong to have some grasp of wth is going on? Or nah? - And more importantly, the thing that's been bothering me the most is, how oversexualized Nodoka is, specially those monster breasts :P And I was wondering if this is a one-time thing or I'll have to endure it forever... I mean, damn: http://i.imgur.com/VJJCLv1.png http://img811.imageshack.us/img811/7716/ardw.png (ep 2) |

His role in the actual important parts of the show is nil.- Doesn't the blond guy make this anime into a kind of harem? Xinisterad said: After a few episodes, you should get into the flow of the games well enough that it won't bother you to not understand the game, it'll be enough to believe they understand the game.- Don't you think the anime would be more enjoyable having some minor knowledge of mahjong to have some grasp of wth is going on? Or nah? Xinisterad said: Well, her breast don't go any where. I think my bother with the (surprisingly high) level of ecchi is probably because I just finished non non biyori before watching... which doesn't sexualize the girls at all. That aside, knowing it will be coupled with sweetness and emotions made me less reluctant to keep on. Thanks for clearing that up. |

Perhaps I should have made more clear in the description that it is quite sexualized. I just didn't really think of it like that at the time. IT IS there, it's just, I would argue quite strongly that it doesn't really a determent the characters. It's really an over the top story about mahjong and relationships between girls and I think the sexualization is coming from the same place that the over the top mahjong super powers that come into the show also comes from. It's all just loud and very in your face but just as they really are taking the game serious and playing with genuine determination, I think so are the characters to be taken seriously and and their personalities to be genuine. As I described to a friend recently "[Non Non Biyori]'s like Saki only there's no mahjong, no magical powers, there's only 5 or 6 people in the cast, it's a lot more innocent and there's no real plot or drama going on." Which is my funny way of saying, it's pretty much nothing like NNB. |

I'm not a big fan of fanservice or overly sexualized girls. Those things can instantly make me drop or strongly dislike a show, depending on how it's done. After watching most of this show it hasn't been much of a problem for me though, besides Nodokas breasts there is not much else (although there is some) and it's not really a big focus by any means. The overall sweetness and the girls personalities takes top priority by far and makes it extremely enjoyable for that reason. Also I did some more watching today, as of ep 20: Wow, that final mahjong game was really intense, I got really fired up. I was actually expecting Koromo to win, but yet have all the others say it was fun playing with her, which would make her happy. I guess I was half right. Either way, seeing her happy made me happy. All the backstories during the game though, I thought I couldn't love the characters more and then all that happens. I can't believe how such a big cast can have so many different lovable characters. About Koromo again, she is absolutely adorable and I just wanna take care of her. All that petting is deadly cute. Kyaputen and her kitten is really cute too, that hug during the match was adorable. I was wondering who of them was in the favorable position, hugging someone who is sad or being hugged while being sad.. I guess they even out. Another thing worth mentioning is of course Saki and Nodoka sleeping and holding hands during the train ride home. Cute sleeping girls will always be #1 for me. Stealth Momo too, with all that sneaking around being unnoticable I wonder how much time she spends quitely admiring a certain someone Not sure about the pool episode though, animation felt off to me. Or is that just me? I can swear everything was just way different. Serves as a nice break I suppose, certainly was needed after that final match. I doubt I will be finishing before the year ends, but I should be able to within the first few days of the next year. Edit: Kept forgetting, the new OP and ED. I think I prefer the new ones overall, especially the OP. The ED doesn't quite have the same waai waai to it, but I really love the song and I keep listening to it. |

And finished! Well that was a great experience, way over my expectations. Overall this was a very good show. The way the mahjong was presented was very interesting and turned it into something really cool. I initially thought that I would find the playing uninteresting, but it incorporated the characters personalities and emotions in a nice way that greatly added to the enjoyment. As for the girls and their relationships, aa.. There's so many things to take note of it would take forever to go over everything. Without going into any details; overall it was very heartwarming and cute to watch. The atmosphere was very easy to absorb and the interactions always felt just right. Although I did find some Saki and Nodoka scenes to be slightly inconsistent in terms of emotional development throughout the show, especially from Sakis side. I'm not sure if I can explain exactly how though. Edited: After a bit of thinking I might find her seiyuus work to be slightly lacking in some scenes, not Saki as a character herself. And the score: 10/10 I don't care for scores but something that is enjoyable to the max shouldn't get any less. (I don't know how this post took way over an hour to write.) |
