So it would be colorful? It's said also that anime reflects what they want to be.

I figured they looked "white" because of the targeted demographics. If I'm not mistaking one of the reasons is that not many African or Latinos ever visit Japan. Not many live in Japan or are seen in Japan to be represented in anime. Though their are more anime now that incorporate more ethnic groups.

This is something I've always wondered about. East-Asian people in general have black hair, brown eyes, flat noses, and small breasts. Characters in anime, however, do not seem to possess these physical traits; they are seen to have brown/red/blonde hair, blue/green eyes, well-defined noses, and (invariably) big breasts.

Are Japanese people ashamed of their looks?

Contrary to popular belief a not all characters in anime have big pancake eyes look like recolored versions of other characters or have unnatural hair color. I suspect that the reason why in some anime the characters have these features is to make the look different from one another in poorly or cheaply drawn anime that feature the big pancake eyes and the recolored characters. A lot of anime does have a more realistic look to it.

Maybe it is because Blacks don't go out and try to attribute every character that happens to match their skin tone as part of their race?

Historically speaking manga was largely inspired in style by Disney, just as the Impressionist art movement was inspired by Japanese woodblock prints, its about artistic recycling. Couple that with the aftermath of World War II that led to western comic and film influences being taken in, it was then given a makeover and evolved into what we see as todays manga and anime.

There is an awful lot more to it, but thats the gist. Its all about the favoured style of the artist and has nothing to do with ethnicity, which mostly tends to be defined by names and setting rather than appearance, this is why say Akiras Japanese Shotaro Kaneda looks like the tanned brother of Steamboys English James Ray Steam ( both were created by the same person, Katsuhiro Otomo, Ray Steam isn't Japanese, and Kaneda isn't English, its simply how Otomo draws ).

Anime characters aren't real, they have big eyes, strange colored hair and in some animes they don't even have noses. I don't know any white person with these characteristics...

i also think if the characters looked strictly Japanese it would be kind of boring, the one thing i like about anime. is that white is kind if a neutral color that can go good with some of the crazy hairstyles and such IE the blue, pink, green hair and such, seems to go better with a white skin tone. just my opinion idk if it even made any sense. no offence to Japanese people. maybe its their way of apologizing for ww2..lol. but yea thank you Japanese entertainment industry for creating amazing animated shows that simply crush most of the american animation.

Well, it would be boring if anime characters were all made to look like real life people. Since anime involves drawing the characters, that's where the creativity can be used to create characters of various looks which makes them look interesting.

whats the first thing you think when you hear Asian black hair squinty eye. since these two are absent people just assume they are white. I think anime characters are just "all desirable traits present." lots of white people want big ass eyes.same with asains I guess. as for strange color hair, its not just the color styles are crazy too. from goku's cone shape hair or phoenix wrights porcupine head. And girls seem to have some hair accessory or hat like thing. they just want unique characters designs.

When I hear Asian, Black Hair, and squinty eyes I think ASIAN since that was the first word and it represents race, not white. If we are going to be racist about skin color I would say yellow, again not white.

Well there is actually a reason for it. A historic reason that goes back to world war 2 and the creation of astro boy. But today its mostly like everyone said, so that the characters are more appealing to an international audience.

The japanese don't think they do.. i remember reading somewhere that, that was the case.

Plus the same question can be put forward to american cartoons.

Why do american cartoon characters almost always look like mutants? With body and head shapes completely unrealistic?

Are american cartoonist ashamed of their looks?

Decent, however this seems to be a case of taking data to fit a theory, rather than the other way around.

For example, the Asian face was "facing the audience", and yet the "naruto" face was facing at some bizarre, upwards and yet sideways angle. Atrocious.

Japanese are "so good at cosplay" because, as far as I know, no other nationality practices it to the same extent. That's like asking why Canadians are so good at making maple syrup :/

I won't argue the skin colour section, because that probably draws a lot of it's roots from racial stereotypes that Asians are yellow.

The facial outlines, especially the eyes was horrible done. Those eyes would be too big for ANYONE, and as such the photos eyes didn't really match. I don't know what it was trying to prove.

I just went and googled "school photo" and "japan school photo", and you immediately notice an an obvious difference. It's not as bad as the media portrays, but it exists. Now I'm curious if a lot of those photos you used were actresses/models/idols, and have had cosmetic surgery (eyelid removal, anyone?).

So, while I would agree that most Japanese characters in anime are in fact loosely based of Japanese appearance, media has butchered it so that it is far from realistic. Last time I checked, Americans don't look like the folks from "The Simpsons" or "South Park" either :P

...........................Dude, seriously?? The Japanese aren't good at cosplay because they've been practicing it longer!! Yeah, it takes real special skills to dress up in the same outfit as a character, put a wig on, and get in a cool pose like the character might do. NO! They're good at it because they have similar features to the characters. I bet you anything if you take two people, on Japanese, the other Caucasian, both with similar height and weight, both wearing the same EXACT cosplay, each in the same EXACT pose, each with the same EXACT amount of cosplay experience and knowledge of the person they are cosplaying, the Japanese cosplayer is going to look more realistic simply because of their japanese features. It might also work well with a Chinese or Korean Cosplayer since those three share many similarities but the Japanese one will always come out looking the best.

God. This entire topic is completely.....what's the word? Well, everyone who agrees and think anime characters are supposed to look westernized or whatever is just...AAARRGGG, THERE AREN'T WORDS TO DESCRIBE THAT TYPE OF EGOTISTICAL ARROGANCE THAT ONLY AMERICANS ARE CAPABLE OF!!!

Fact, some country in this world actually prefer obese girls over normal ones, cuz that's what they think is "Beautiful". Surely if they have TV programs, the whole cast are obese..

Actually, a long time in Japan girls who, as the article I read about the topic described as "being more plump", were considered very beautiful compared to your average skinny girl. Of course, times have changed and now the majority of the world sees toothpick skinny as being attractive (personally I think being anorexic is far less attractive than being on the chubby side) But that's not really the topic, I just thought I'd point it out.......

Why is there so much debate about this?

Fact: anime characters are drawn to be attractive to a Japanese audience.
Fact: the Japanese ideals of beauty are not influenced by white people, they have been around since long before they knew about us.
Ergo: anime characters do not look white.

To reiterate a very informative and accurate post:

And even if anime characters did look white, that doesn't mean Japanese idolize white people. Jumping to that conclusion is what we call bad psychology.
