| I didn't add another character, I didn't even change the character, I just capslocked one of them which actually improves the safety about 2.5 times more than adding another random letter or number, so it's not the same. |

| About a minute, it says. And I have, in fact, tested this myself before. It all of course depends on how the password is stored, but ophcrack, a free password cracking utility for Windows XP and Vista (don't think a 7 ver exists... yet), cracked my password on XP in about 20 seconds. However, I can change it to 11 years by adding one character. Why? Because it's a numeric password. Computers destroy numeric passwords (and anything in the dictionary. Every heard of a dictionary attack?). Add one letter to a numeric password, and it becomes alphanumeric. Just one letter increases the number of possibilities from 1,000,000,000 to 3,656,158,440,062,976, assuming the position of the letter is unknown. There is nothing more secure than a randomized alphanumeric password, other than a larger randomized alphanumeric password. But I'm not worried about computers getting my password. As long as it's human-safe and not in the dictionary, I feel safe. Edit: I felt like looking in to the calculation :) this site only does the calculation for one particular sort of hacking attempt: The Brute Force Attack. I figured as much. FYI, this is the slowest form of password cracking I know of.The formula (which is literally just basic probability): (number of possible characters to the power of length of the password) divided by calculations per second All in all, this really isn't that good at checking password strength. It's what I would call "good enough for discussion." |

Well, it was a joke, but the point is that a CPU in a desktop can do the 10,000,000 million tries per second. | I use two different passwords for most of my accounts. I can't remember which one is for my MAL, so both of them: Password #1: 700 million years Password #2: 13 minutes HOLY HELL D8 And then apparently my computer password would take 302 years, lol. |
