When did the term “Japanimation” started to become “anime” and what was the cause of that?

I think even in the 2000s Japanimation was a byword in mass media to denote the cluster of different connotations uninitiated people had with Japanese animation.

Similarly people will always refer to pop music from Korea as Kpop; Simply calling it pop music calls to mind different and sometimes exclusive acoustics and imagery of British pop from the mid 20th century.

Maybe because and whenever Japanimation became the spearhead of discourse around animation, a word like Anime that doesn't define a point of origination is accessible.
