The people who use "gay" and "retarded" as insults decided that it wasn't giving them the response they wanted anymore so they decided to find a new word that gets the rise they want. I think people don't really think about the meaning behind it but just want to be bad ass. I don't know.

I think it's because kids with autism act differently. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but assholes who use actual mental issues as an insult don't view these differences as negative because they are assholes.

Depends on the useage.

If it's a bunch of assholes picking on a socially awkward person who has a lower emotional age just because they can, then of course that's pretty fuckin mean but if you're just using it in the way people previously used to use words like "retarded" then it isn't as bad. But as long as you consider the fact that the condition associated with the word is an actual issue and don't use it to be an asshole then sure, call your dishwasher autistic or something.

Saying this as a genuine piece-of-paper-and-everything autist. Lol. Do I like the fact people use the name of my condition as an insult? In theory no because I don't consider being autistic to be a degrading thing, but I realise there's alot of tounge-in-cheekness behind it. So I'm not gonna split my dick over it.

Fuck yes, man. Preach.

Everything is offensive these days. Even 'faggot' happened to be somehow an insult, while it's just calling the person a bunch of sticks.

Literally no one but people somehow frozen in the fourteenth century uses it to refer to "a bundle of sticks" in majority English speaking countries.

I've only seen morons and faggots that don't know what autism actually is use it as an insult. Autism isn't categorized as a mental illness, as far as I know. It's usually known as a development disability

People in The Netherlands use diseases like cancer as an insult.
I think this autism one belongs to the same sort of insult group.
People should think about what they say before they call someone something.

This post, and posts like it, are cancer. Using a world like "autism", "faggot" or "retard" in a way that it isn't widely used, disarms the word. If something is "bad and spreads" it is pretty accurate to call it cancer, this is a descriptor of how that thing operates. For example, modern third wave feminism is cancer.

The first time I heard about that Netherlands thing I genuinely laughed aloud, honestly. Then about a year later folks online started being like "Oh X thing is cancerous" "those forums are cancer lmao" etc and it was like... Damn, Netherlands blazing a trail here :')

I also think though, that using things like autism, cancer, faggot, retard, whatever other insult you can think of... they're used because they evoke such a reaction in people. It's not that the person using the word doesn't know someone may be hurt by it, it's that they know and don't give a fuck or they deliberately chose that word to bring about a reaction and whichever word or slur or name they've gone for is the most efficient at doing that.
You want people to stop using "autist" as an insult? Easy, don't react, and they'll move on to another word that gets them what they want.

I mean, many would get angry at you for using 'retarded' as an insult. It can harm the mentally retarded or reinforce a negative image of them.

""Moron" was coined in 1910 by psychologist Henry H. Goddard from the Ancient Greek word μωρός (moros), which meant "dull" (as opposed to oxy, which meant "sharp" (see also: oxymoron)), and used to describe a person with a mental age in adulthood of between 8 and 12 on the Binet scale. It was once applied to people with an IQ of 51–70, being superior in one degree to "imbecile" (IQ of 26–50) and superior in two degrees to "idiot" (IQ of 0–25). The word moron, along with others including, "idiotic", "imbecilic", "stupid", and "feeble-minded", was formerly considered a valid descriptor in the psychological community, but it is now deprecated in use by psychologists"

It's people not understanding what autism is. To the Internet autism is anyone who is socially awkward/anti-social. What's ironic is people who lurk on message boards are the ones that use it the most.

MAL user 1- "I don't really talk to most of my classmates, they're boring and I have nothing in common with them"

MAL user 2- "LEL whetdefek you fucken autist get a lyfe!"

I used to wonder why people used it as an insult, while I don't see autism myself to be something bad; just a different style of thinking compared to everyone else. You are still functional- it depends how much, I suppose.

I still get rude remarks of my autism for spelling it out for people, but I don't mind it anymore. I often just want to learn and know what the other person thinks so I can be sure what they mean, without misunderstandings. Most people I have met are simply insulting me without explaining something I can't understand easily (for example metaphysics). We all just suffer from other people.

It's just time to grow a thick skin if you feel it upsets you.

For me it's so stupid and non-sense to insult someone by calling them autistic etc. This is so bad because people who really are autistic or has alot of serious health problems they didn't want them , most of these people didn't choose it so we should respect them and also try to help them as much as we can ...
But in nutsheel insulting and blaming other people is non-sense in my opinion ( I can understand if someone by impulse will insult because of emotions but no 24/7 ... )

It's the same when you curse with gay, cancer ect. People use insults to offend, and autism apparently offends people. You aren't going to use a 'nice' insult against someone you dislike, just so you don't have to offend that person.

I have autism. You can choose to be offended by that insult, and I choose not to. If you get offended by someone who uses that insult, then you probably shouldn't be on the internet. You need to grow a thicker skin first.

Projection I'd imagine. The only people I remember calling others autistic were those who may well actually be autistic

Is there really any difference between calling someone retarded and calling someone retarded though? It's as if "you're retarded" has been surrogated by "you're autistic."
