I can explain why it's not that popular, though.

Is princess jellyfish josei?

If not.. it shows that it's kind of a misconception that all of it is slow paced. Princess Jellyfish is pretty upbeat with a lot of humor

Definitely is one, and it's still similar to the other tropes: Realistic and about an unpopular topic (beauty, acceptance)

On the topic of Uta Koi:

Firstly, it's historical. Looking at the highest rated historical anime on this website, they all have action as a subgenre, or are like Mushishi which isn't really Historical at all.

Secondly, it's romance. If we do the same, the highest rated romance on this website are modern ones with only one main pairing.

Let's not get off track from the topic. Leave Usagi Drop out of this for now.

What you're saying is something already said with every other highly rated show.

silversongwriter said:
and did you just compare mushi-shi and usagi drop?

I am, because they are similar and very well received in anime communities. Feel free to give me your criticisms on why it's not a good show.

Never really said Usagi Drop was bad. For me there's not too much to praise (besides the music and animation), or condemn... For me, it's just okay.

Well... Wikipedia mislabels a lot of shoujo anime as josei... so maybe I guess that would explain it. But to someone really ignorant... Someone ignorant of josei anime... I could see how one would come to that conclusion... simply by looking at the fact that the vast majority of yaoi fans are female... To someone uneducated about the genre, it'd be easy to make that misconception.

like how on MAL Loveless is called Shoujo
But on wikipedia it's called Josei

Wikipedia sucks for anime
Nice fast edit. Fortunately, not everyone is ignorant as you. I was trying to imply that if there was such a thing as josei + yaoi, then it'd be popular enough to be known about. You just said it, eh? "simply by looking at the fact that the vast majority of yaoi fans are female...". Mal tags are inconsistent. Just googling around will suffice.

Exactly... that's my point. Ignorance about the genre and what it's really like might be the reason a lot of people don't ever give it a chance.

from what i get from the wikipedia article, comic zero sum is in the 'targeted towards female readers' gray zone; even on their mangaupdate page their manga are labeled both shoujo and josei, so neither of them is totally right

Probably just repeating what everyone else has said but because it doesn't pander to the bigger audience. I'm told iosei anime does fairly well in TV ratings, stuff like Chihayafuru, but they're not the kind of stuff that sells anime-wise.

people also forget there's action in josei... 07-ghost was one I was planning on watching. But then someone here warned me it had shonen-ai elements, so I'm not gonna bother watching to find out if it does or not.

but I will say that it's an action series, that's all I know... And that proves not all Josei is slow-paced romance/drama.

I was surprised by princess jellyfish because it wasn't slow paced either. The jokes were rapid, and the characters were so much more cartoonish than I'd have expected from josei... if there was no crossdressing or talk of fashion, I'd have assumed it was a seinen comedy.

well to be honest... I think only two kinds of anime should be super popular... sci-fi action and moe...
I want josei to be more popular, but between having the market flooded with mature josei romance and silly moe SOL... sorry, I'm picking the moe.

In fact, it's kind of a good thing moe anime is more popular, because I could see Josei romance getting old super quick if there was a shit ton of it.

Not bashing josei... but I gotta say, moe definitely deserves it's popularity.

Apparently Tokyo Ghoul's manga is a seinen, despite it feeling more like a shounen.

Here's a list of 2015 seinen anime on MAL. Just look at the pics to see if they're typical cute girls doing cute things or not. Will probably get bigger as more titles are announced.
