I generally do soft shading. Sometimes cell shading, but I prefer soft shading because it looks a bit more paint-ish.

Nice realist drawing.
Sure a scanner would be a good thing but don't worry too much about it. By experience I can tell you that if your drawing is bad it won't be better if you scan it and if it's good it won't get that bad if you don't.

Love it but I feel that something is off with the shading on the face, I think that the nose should be just a little bit more on the right.

Was bored, didn't drew in month so the result is kind of meh. Also once I took a photo of it the shading looked really bad even though it look alright in my book.

I think you overdid it with the shading, and try to use different direction of strokes when using hatching.

This would be a bit of help: http://www.drawinghowtodraw.com/drawing-lessons/improve-drawing/hatching-cross-hatching.html

Thank you!! And I thought the same thing and spent like 20 minutes trying to redo the nose, and the original looked the best. I'm not sure why, but all the other ones were awful!

I think it's because it's shaded a bit more realistically and it's a more anime style drawing than I usually do. If I give her a normal looking nose, it's just totally creepy. But with an anime drawing, it makes the shading look strange to really define the face at all.

Well now that I gave a closer inspection here's what I think you could improve on this drawing (Not that i'm a specialist as well so I might be wrong on certain points):
-I don't know what is the yellow thing in her hair but if it's supossed to be a ribbon to hold her twintail it doesn't look as such imo.
-Nose is a bit too much on the left and her right eye is a bit too close to the side of her face.
-Mouth is placed properly according to the chin but not the nose, the mouth run under the whole nose and not only half of it, especially if she's smilling.
-Her collarbone seem off.

Your problem from this drawing is mostly face placement and the link between shoulder/neck/collarbone/breast. Don't worry though, I suck at these do just like most people.
-her left breast look much bigger than her right breast.

But I'll say it again, even though I nitpicked everything I could, it's a very good drawing ^^.

Unfortunately I don't really draw super anime-style often at all... so that's why it's a bit strange for me I guess?

If you're not familiar with the show, she always has little stars over her ponytail holders. They are fabric, I think? They just sort of hang over it. They honestly sort of look like stickers. xD;;;

Something to keep in mind with the face, though... her head is turned a bit, thus the fact that things are toward the side more. And her eyes are spaced three wide like they should be, so I don't know x__x;;

Like I said, not doing anime-style often sort of made me weary of drawing her like that because I never draw big eyes like that either. I changed their size and moved them around a bunch and just thought that looked the best lol.

I will definitely give you the breast thing because it's all in how I painted it. In the normal lineart and sketch it looked fine but once painted I was like wtffff but couldn't easily fix it after having painted it all. Sorrryyy for the big boobie. But hey in real life they are always two different sizes! (just not usually an entire cup size which is what that looks like LOL)

Thank you for the suggestions!

Compared to all your drawings it's nothing but w.e!
Originally sketched with pencil onto lined paper..
I then took a photo of the sketch with my webcam..
opened the photo onto Windows Paint and coloured it in while watching school rumble..
Finally I put the Paint edited image onto photoshop and added a filter and blush to her face..

It's pretty good for me.. hah..

I like your work- especially the expression :))))) if it were up to me I'd probably just add on more color- to break the blue... maybe orange? just my taste :)

I still have the original paint image all it takes is a refill and new filter layer.. but I wanted to keep it to original colours of Hinata.
It was the first drawing I've done in like 2 years..

I did, however start doing another sketch today because of this thread. I did sketch the whole thing but decided to redo the bangs because I did them too thin (It's going to be Yuki Nagato btw)
It'll look a lot better when I get it edited.

You're painting is incredible, are you studying fine arts? my EX is studying fine arts and does very similar drawings.
I have no idea how you draw impressionist. no matter how much time I spend doing it, I can't pull it off. very nice work! :D

thats a really good beginning sketch- love the soft shading especially. :)))
actually I've never had any painting education whatsoever... but, starting July im off to painting class so that should be fun :)))), I actually don't know anything about painting- these are all drawings im afraid- with pen, pencil, ink and colored pencils :)

Id imagine that your drawing if a lot darker- maybe you should try fixing it with photoshop... I use a real crappy cell phone camera that really kills all the colors in a drawing- so I always use photoshop to make it look more like the original :)

thanks. try watching a tutorial video called "animator's survival kit." it teaches a lot but animation comes down to trial and error. Getting critique from people is also important.

Ah thank you very much :) i've took a look and also saw the book as well 'which i will get' trying to get back into learning 3D animation (been a year or two since i left uni) really want to get back into 2D animating but i don’t really have a program for 2D animation anymore, used to use Flash MX.

Well it has been awhile since i posted something in this thread, too busy getting back into animation and i've also did a lot of sketching proportions and anatomy. Today i decided to do a little drawing/ or scene from my Manga/story (haven’t done the rough pages yet, working on them)

This is my main character - oh and this is my first time drawing a background thats within a house xD lol

Wow these are very good =) really liked the one at 0:34 , but I do agree with Maddo would be nice to see original work with your drawing skills ;)

@morganielesad
Ah thank you =) yeah thought it would be better to give detail on what was happening as it is a scene, still got a lot of work to do with the story and designing too, especially drawing background as in that drawing was my first time drawing backgrounds, I always seemed to avoid them lol

I also recorded myself drawing that piece, wondering if I should do this more or not.

Try drawing on a perspective grid. I think you'll find pleasing results.

In case this guy's explanation wasn't very clear, this is the idea behind it:

but thanks for that video and picture the more help/advice i get the better as when it comes to drawing backgrounds, that is were i lack most.

As your first time using paint tool SAI it is very good =) the finished drawing will come out great, i recently got that program myself i haven’t coloured anything in it yet but have inked on it and it is a very good program. Keep up the good

There is no likeness to the characters on the show. The forms and proportion are not correct. I think that the arabesque style decoration is lovely, but very time consuming and probably shouldn't be done until you are confident with the rest of the image. As in my previous critique, you need to do more head studies. Specifically to fix your shading, learn the planes of the head. If lighting comes from above someone's head, a cast shadow from the brow should appear over the eyelid because the brow protrudes out further than the eye itself. So in your figure, the way the light is rendered is like shining a flashlight directly on the face of a ball. You put the highlight right on top of the eye. When you render, it should give a sense of dimension. Take a look at some of these head studies so you get an idea of what I'm talking about. Especially the drawing where I show a line passing over the surface across an eye. Also note the cutaway shape of the eye socket. The eye lids have a thickness and it wraps around the ball like shape of the eye which sits again in that carved out socket. You can see the way the line language is used along with proper shading to convey a sense of 3 dimensional space. Remember, shading occurs where the rays of light cannot reach. Also, half tones will darken as they turn away from their light source into core shadow. Learn the modeling factors if you've never heard of them. To master rendering takes lots of practice and lots of studies like these. To be more effective with your practice, focus on one area at a time instead of drawing full on projects. Work on your linework one day and focus only on that. The next day, try to get an image to read with only value. The next day work on your perspective. The next, work on your figure studies. Linework and general drawing skills are important too. My advice is draw anything and everything you can. You'll build up your visual vocabulary and sharpen up your skills with every sketch. That mileage really makes a huge difference in your work. Good luck.

thank you :)))) you are right with most of the things you said, as always :)) luckily Ill be able to work on the technique cause Im starting to go on drawing/painting class in a couple of days- a perfect solution, considering the fact that im very lazy to do sketch practice on my own, as obvious... but again thank you for taking time, and for the sketch examples. :))

there is one thing that I probably should have mentioned- as much as I love the TV series, cause they did a pretty good job, they aged up all of the characters and completely changed their appearances- so my drawing is fan art- based strictly from the book, and it's what characters on the show should have looked like :))) of course I don't blame them for aging up everyone on the show as no one would allow them to have children of 9, 11, 13 playing some awful scenes on TV.

Well, the problem with the drawing is the shoulders. They about 1 whole head length down from the chin. Realistic proportions are about 1/3 of a head length down. Shoulders are about 2 to 2.5 heads wide and your drawing is about 3 heads wide. I realize you're not going for reality here, but you still have to be within bounds. I mean, the 1/2 a head or so you're off on the body width isn't that big of a deal. But the neck is 3 times longer than it is in reality and that's why it looks so awkward. Anyway, Keep drawing and getting better. Aside from a little proportion issue the drawing looks great.

Perspective is right.. But besides that, this is actually great.
