(This is a massive spoiler about the truth of the entire story, please open with caution if you plan on reading the Manhua)
Xu and Yan met in school, and she was attracted to the fact that he spent his hobby time designing "Secret/Escape Chambers/Rooms". Hu, Yan, Xu, and Qing all formed the Escape Room club together.
The story + anime initially leads you believe Yan traps Xu's father in an escape room he designed out of a misunderstanding that Xu's father was a school janitor who had tricked her (this part I am not sure on the actual details of the trick, I had a hard time translating it). So the story makes you believe Yan designed an escape room and killed Xu's father; and that now she is trying to continuously torture him and seek revenge by mentally harming him in this manner and that Hu and Ling are trying to keep Yan aware from Xu for his protection.
However, the police get deeper and deeper involved (Officer Peng) after Shi Yu is kidnapped and so is Qing.
They take Hu in for questioning and Hu explains to the police the four of their relationship. How they met, how Yan used to design escape rooms and that's why Xu and Yan have such a connection. Hu tells the police Yan had killed her father out of a "misconception that he was the school janitor who tricked Xu"
But that's where the police realize Yan didn't actually kill Xu's father. It was Hu.
Zhi Hu suffers from a delusionary disorder. The police got testimony from Xu herself that she and Yan had visited her parents' house together and Xu's father complimented Yan. Meaning, Yan would have known it wasn't a school janitor and was Xu's father.
Hu was actually the one who trapped Xu's father in the escape room and killed him. Xu knows this about Yan and isn't trying to torment him, but Yan and Xu were once in love and she is trying to help him regain his memories but is trying to do it slowly as to not trigger his amnesia to try and wipe them away again. She says she has to be delicate and slow because many times have they tried to help his memories regain but something triggers them to go away again and she has to start all over.
Hu pushed Yan down a staircase and caused him to get his head injury in an attempt to pin it on Yan (the killer of Xu's father) and make Yan himself believe he was the culprit. Xu knows Yan did not kill her father.
At the end of the Manhua the police identify Hu as Xu's father's killer, but Hu didn't kidnap Qing and Shi Yu.
They question Xu and Xu knows that Yan is the kidnapper who kidnapped Qing and Shi Yu (in the anime, it was just Shi Yu in the bottle room). The anime showcases Yan and Xu sleeping together because Xu knows Yan can identify where his alternative personality is keeping Shi Yu and Qing.
The police confront Xu about why she has been shielding Yan this whole time and she explains what she's been trying to do. In China, the police are only able to uncover the truth and it is up to the victims to decide to press charges in court or not. So, Officer Peng's assistant wonders why nobody pressed charges.
Xu is giving them immense amounts of money to stay quiet about what is happening. She offers to fund Shi Yu's bakery story for her goods, for example, and pays off Qing to stay quiet (it's why they get paid so much working for her). Not because they are a ring of murderers or torturers, but because Xu loves Yan and his originally personality, but she knows he will try to harm people that get close to her out of unsconious jealousy.
The cycle continues again and again. Yan didn't kill her father. Xu knows this. She just wants him to come back to his original memories and personality.
Thank you so much for reading and giving us this summary! I have been viewing this thread ever since the last episode aired . This explanation finally has me satisfied and can now move forward with my life.
I think there will be a 2nd season...they left us in a cliffhanger.Btw,I still think Hu zhi is behind all these.Maybe He has inserted a chip or something in the MC's head to trigger his beast??
so my guess was correct....yokatta desu!although my intuitive reason was wrong
The thing is, no one "killed" her father. He having a heart attack while being in an escape room is pure coincidence (unless something untoward happened that we don't know about). Sure it may have been designed by the MC but that didn't "kill" him. If her father was walking down the street, he could just as likely have suffered the same heart attack.
For the MC to get amnesia from that & Xu to blame him is idiotic.

Thanks for the translation of the manhua ending. I started to wonder if the Chinese to English didn't have enough context in it like most manhua translations, or they clobbered the story intentionally.
I did wonder if Yan's parents were in on the reset, but her comment about him being at his place of employment for a month makes me think they are in the dark about his change after the incident on the stairs.
I enjoyed this anime regardless of the fumble towards the end. I tended not to watch Chinese anime since I am still getting use to listening to Chinese speech versus Japanese, but I am glad I took a chance on this one.

@nox7 Oh man, that's fucked up, whether it's Hu, Yan or Xu.
In the end, both Hu and Yan are criminals. Thanks for the spoiler. Now I can move on and pretend I didn't waste my attention and time for this anime
I was directed to this anime from a Mystery tag search on a streaming site. I really enjoyed this entire series with
only a few filler moments. The art was very fine and I like the style. The MC acted like an idiot many times but
I can see where mental illness might do that to him. The locked room theme was very interesting and I liked
the episodes that had them included. The music was wonderful and this anime was one of the very few that I
would sit, close my eyes, and nod my head to the opening theme. Lol. A pleasure to have watched and 9/10 for me.
traed said: This has to be incomplete because things really dont add up here. Having amnesia wouldn't make someone hallucinate nor does dissociative identity disorder so what about all that supernatural stuff? Unless Yan is being drugged on a regular basis. Also if Aiyou has such a grudge with him why did she sleep with him? Not like that helped him remember anything.
Yan obviously didnt do anything with Shi Yu, he didnt have the time to and was around other people when she was taken. That likely was something Aiyou did. Maybe the room she was put in was a recreation of one he had designed before but why endanger someone else over it? Nothing makes sense.
Hello, just wanted to fact check you about Shi Yu. He met Lou Weian at 7, Shi Yu was kidnapped at 9:40 he checked cameras about an hour later at 22:40. Just rewatched EPs 8,9 so it's fresh on my mind. The Xin Rinsheng thing confuses me tho. Like the appearance in the last episode is the only part that throws everything off for me. But the eye colours are basically the same so I think they're meant to be the same person although the last seen throws a wrench in this
Ending worsened the rest. Pointless turn of events ultimately. Buildups without any resolution = the anime. The cliffhangers are proof of that, a comedy
Also every mystery was artificial, there were no actual real stakes at the end. Visuals and vibes were the only good aspect, plus character interactions were fine
