Hey nice seeing you're working on anatomical proportions, Lihn. I think if you study the shape (proportions), the forms (how they are structured), and rhythms (how the anatomy flows) you will be able to draw really well.

I did some sketches today. Kinda different subject matter.

Well, technically no it's not a gesture drawing. They are similar because what you're doing also captures an action. A gesture drawing is a more abstract idea. You are instead capturing the flow. It's a mental connection between you and your subject. The drawing you have there is tied to shape and contour while a gesture drawing is much more primitive. You think more in terms of line and feeling than anything else. You learn to feel the action and express it in line (not shape). You can use circular lines to indicate directions in space if you'd like, but try not to focus on contour. It's really secondary to the action we are analyzing. People are not contours, we create contours with our form. Anyway, I've seen some online tutorials and other sources that are just terrible, so unfortunately your not gonna find a whole lot of reliable free advice. I found 2 very credible sources when I learned how to do it and if you have the money I suggest you pick them up. First, I found a book on Gesture drawing by Walt Stanchfield. He was an animator and teacher at disney studios. I also highly recommend getting the video series put out by glen vilppu on anatomy and basic drawing. He was a teacher in the animation industry for 30 years. Here's an example of what gesture drawings look like:

They look deceptively simple, but it's one of those traps that you can fall into. While the lines appear to be drawn very quickly, it's actually slow and calculated. Still you leave out enough detail to where the drawings typically take about a minute or two to finish. Don't underestimate it's power.

Well, I'd like to also say that you should try and make your form appear more 3 dimensional. For instance, the arms you drew have the appearance of circles rather than cylinders. In my previous example, I used circles for the toes, but the concept was trying to get across was that there was overlapping involved, which means one object is drawn in front of the other. In the following series of drawings, I hope you get more of the picture. Everything can be broken down to forms and shapes. But remember that they are supposed to represent actual anatomy! so the roundness of the top of the torso should be more egg shaped and fall inline with the shape of a rib cage more than a ball, smaller at the top than at the bottom of the 10th rib, which sort of squares off that portion of the torso. The more you get into it, the more you'll understand.

Good sketches. Especially the exercises done in marker; I find the rendering interesting.

@iubkram - I hope I'm correct in my assumption that you're using "sick" as a good thing, lol. Otherwise, I'm always open to criticism and input.

@Naruleach - Thanks. I'm trying to start thinking about design and how to make things look interesting. I'll try not to disappoint when I do a finished piece, for once...

Honest opinion is that for character concept and design, which is probably the intention of the drawing, it's an A+. I find it very interesting. If I was gonna nit pick at it, I would suggest you should probably work on the drapery. The contours of the shorts don't change in response to the movement of the fabric. I can see the shapes you put down to indicate wrinkles, but it feels like you're faking the funk. Again, awesome drawing, just trying to point out an area where I think you can improve.

Here are some character portraits that I am also working on. They're fairly roughly pencilled. I think I'm gonna start inking before I scan anything cause lead always comes out so shitty looking. Let me know what you think of them. I'm in the early design phase, so try not to be too brutal.

Yep, that's my next goal. I've just been so heavy on anatomy lately, but I really need to sit down and work out folds until I understand them completely.

Your drawings are really improving IMO, and the proportions are reading very well. Heads is one thing I think in order to become a "complete" artist you need to study the structure of. The structure of the head, the forms and rhythms of the face and the forms of the features. Otherwise I feel like it will be very difficult to push features for anything other than cute girls and bishounen guys. I'm not good at it yet though, so take with a grain of salt...

But I think keeping in mind the planes that features are resting on is important, when you draw non-frontal portraits:

Thanks for your advice. It certainly is a good thing I did take the time to study head anatomy, otherwise I would be limited in what I can draw. Being able to draw varying levels of detail is definitely a necessary skill as well as different angles and expressions.

Thank you for the advice perspective, you're like my unofficial art sensei now xD I think the book by Walt Stanchfield you were talking about is called "Drawn to Life" I'll likely pay the bookstore a visit sometime this week to see if I can get it.

Also thank you for the clarification on gesture, and just exactly what it is...I guess I'm a little too focused on the "form" and less on the actual flow and movement of my drawings. It's going to take me some time to get used to gestures though, I've only ever drawn still images, the concept of movement in a drawing is slightly foreign to me...to the point that it's almost counterintuitive. Usually I pick things up exceptionally quickly, but this seems more like something you learn from practise, and seeing what you've done wrong and how to fix it. I'll practise with gestures, and I'll definitely read the book you've recommended. Hopefully next time I post I'll be able to comfortably make an effective gesture drawing.

P.S. I found the video series you also mentioned...but it's a little out of my price range. I'm either going to see if I can find clips of it somewhere or just stick to the book and your advice for the time being xD

@Fui: I absolutely love your style! I can't wait to see the next drawing you make. They're really quite impressive, hopefully within the next year or two I'll be able to approach the level of drawing you and Perspective (and a few others on here) are at.

Nice chara drawing, Kazeshini.

@Linh, it's great that you have a goal, and hopefully you also look at artists much more skilled than me. As long as you strive to get better, you will achieve your goals.

I did some more random character sketches.

Wuw, you all are amazing! How do you learn to draw like this? Do you just practise lots, or have you taken classes, or read books? Are these sketches, or do you make them up yourselves? Both? Which is the best to start with, sketching or drawing?

Ahaha, sorry ^///^ I'd really love to learn, though.

@Lilah:- For me, it was constant practicing, I never took any art classes in my life(not counting the ones in school, but they had nothing to do with it), and neither read any book, though I plan to do that in the future, in my case, I copy some of the pictures I get from the Internet, I think sketching is the best part to start, because it makes you focus on the basics stuff, like the figure and the proportions, and from there you can quite easily add details to create a 1st-class drawings. :)

Do learn it, it's fun :>

@xRaIN:- No, it's just constant practicing as they say, Practice Makes Perfect :)

Thanks again for the encouragement DoubleDango.

Regarding some recent questions ITT, I personally don't believe in talent, but I do believe drawing skill comes from a ton of different factors. Ultimately I think you really have to want to just learn and get better (drawing = srs business).

I tried drawing some scene comps while I was out today. I was thinking about some events that happened in Ano Hana while drawing them.

One word:- excellent, your drawings looks so great, and with a sophisticated shading it will look even better, it's what I aim at making someday, how much have you been practicing?

The eyes in Hina's drawing looked smaller than it should be, but overall it;s still a good one.

Thanks, i've been seriously practising about a week drawing about 1 to 3 scetches a day (It's school holidays though), last month I drew some characters and they looked funny, lol. Before that I liked to draw instrument things like guitar, table, ETC (and I still can't draw without looking at a picture yet)
I'll draw Hina again someday shortly, ha ha. And I think I'll learn for the sophisticated shading later (I'll have to 'cos I wanna study to be an architect).
Here's my new one I just finished an hour ago.

Here're my old ones (I drew on Wednesday and Thursday)

look a lot different from present ones, aren't they? ha ha.

You're welcome, drawing tools & instruments could be interesting at times, I like to draw them when they're related to the character(mostly when the character is holding them).

Hina, Biribiri, Nagi, Angel.... I like your selections of characters, that's the kind of characters I mostly draw, as for the new drawings, that Saito one looks fairly good, but to be a fair critic, I think the chin is a little square and the legs look to small to support him, Same for Saber's head, I loved your Biribiri one, it sounds perfect to me, I will be looking forward to see your Hina whenever it's done :)

It looks really good. I think the idea is what counts and it's a beautiful illustration. However, the perspective needs to be tweaked a bit. The verticals are not truly vertical and the spacing is a bit tight between the desk, chair and wall behind her. I realize it's just a sketch, just pointing out what I see.

Yes you're right, I eyeballed it and my spatial drawing skills are not very good. I definitely need practice in this area so I'm trying to do compositional shots right now. Thanks!
