I highly doubt Aniplex are targeting the causal anime fans..instead they are using a similar system used in japan. They would probably be happy if their releases sell around 500 copies.

Exactly this, if they are getting profit then there is no need for them to change their agenda.

This is why I get that hint of disappointment when I see Aniplex snatch away a good series.

HAHAHA

I paid around $500 for season 1 of Ranma dubbed on VHS back in 1996 and this was shortly before my 12th birthday. Saved big on my allowance, birthday money, and XMas money. Anime today is NOT THAT expensive compared to the VHS days when one tape was like $25-$50 for 2 to 3 episodes in ONE LANGUAGE!
That was then, and this is now. Aniplex of America needs to get with the times.

You actually got free money from your mom and dad? Lucky bastard.

I never said I got "free" money. Ever heard of getting an allowance? And if you had to pay your own birthday presents as a kid then you had a fucked up child hood.

It took my almost a year to save that much money to just buy a small set of tapes of anime.

And the times are that anime today is NOT THAT expensive.

An allowance is free money, so is birthday money and Christmas money and etc. I didn't pay for my own birthday presents, I just got actual things instead of money.

And stop comparing anime from the past to the anime of today. You should be comparing anime of today (Aniplex of America) to more anime of today (everyone else). Looking back at the past for a false sense of appreciation of current prices is stupid.

People can work for allowances, so they aren't free money.

And you show how much money Aniplex makes compared to Funimation with their anime sales in the west. That's the way to see if what they are doing is working for them or not. And either way they won't change.

Whether it works for them or not doesn't change the fact that I and a lot of other people consider their prices unreasonable.

And it's not "either way they won't change"--because (hypothetically) if it's not working for them, then they're fucking themselves over. In that situation, they'd either need to change or die.

lol

what a sense of entitlement. You think yo deserve what you consider reasonable prices? If whatever theyre doing works for them, i doubt that they give a damn what some people thing is unreasonable.

I think we should all consider ourselves lucky to be able to watch anime for free pretty easily

That's what I'm trying to figure out - does it really work for them?

Well they still seem to be alive and still licensing new shows. Though surprisingly they just released Zetsuen no Tempest Vol 1 + bonus stuff for only $60... Surprising low for them.

That piece of evidence could be used as a counterpoint to IntroverTurtle's silly claim that they "won't change". For 300 minutes of footage plus bonus contents for only $60 shows that Aniplex is beginning to listen to their consumers.

I dont see why they'd do something that isnt working for them.

There are many kinds of business models out there. It seems that Aniplex has chosen to target their products to collectors and hardcore anime fans.

I can think of a few advantages of this:

- Less production cost
- Less financial commitment and risk if going for a fewer yet more expensive stock - Let's be real and think about how many people really buy anime DVDs. not many. Most casual fans will stream or DL, and Aniplex has come to terms with this fact. Instead of doing what funimation is doing - uploading all of their series to youtube (make money off of ads), cracking down on funimation torrents, and selling their DVDs for dirt cheap - they are going the route of having a better chance of selling all of their inventory - increased efficiency. They dont want to be stuck with tons of DVDs sitting around in warehouses because casual fans dont buy them. They dont want to pay warehouse fees to store them. They probably want their profits quickly, and their inventory gone. And they realize that hardcore fans will probably buy the DVDs for any price, even if they've already seen the show on computer or internet. Or if a title flops - they dont want to be stuck with useless inventory.

It's pretty hard to sell in volume, especially when it comes to something unpopular with anime. You need to have suppliers, vendors, etc too. I think they are using a good strategy for a company with probably fewer than 100employees.

that said, i still dont know if it's actually working lol

Some things are worth buying at Aniplex USA pricing, most are not, no. I do have 5 series from them, and two on order though which were/are.
