Oh, now that you mentioned it, I did not notice that Arata did not even rank. In fact, the anime slips through my radar this entire time. It looks quite nice, how comes? I guess the low sales has something to with Arata being animated by JM Animation, a Korean animation studio. I'm kind of curious if anyone has confirmed what cause the massive spike in OreGairu preorders on Amazon. I know the last episode was pretty popular, but the spike only seemed to happen on release date which contradicts everything I thought I understood about these things since that's usually when orders start to go down isn't it? Can anyone confirm if it was just a shortage leading people to rush to Amazon to make the order thus driving up it's rank. Regarding Valvrave I can't help but have this sinking feeling that it's going to perform well below what Sunrise/Aniplex is probably expecting which is above the 10K mark. That show has a lot of 1 and 2 star reviews and seems to have earned the Japanese fanbases ire (albeit not anywhere near to the extent it has over here in North America though to say that Valvrave actually "earned" North America's ire so much as it was bestowed upon it would be a failure to properly describe the circumstances I think) so I just don't see it being the hit I know the production committee wants. It won't do terrible, just won't meet their goal. I kind of predict 5,000 for volume 1 at best, just a hunch. Starting to think Sunrise might have to rethink it's strategies for it's TV mecha anime as that would make two in a row after Gundam AGE that just don't seem to have reached the audience I know is there for this sort of thing. They're an ambitious and tenacious company, I know they can figure something out as long as the fanbase in Japan hasn't totally turned against them, which judging by the average above 10K/Vol sales of their shows doesn't seem to be the case at all. |

Doesn't the first volume of OreGairu contain one ep + a new LN + soundtrack? It's also priced lower than a typical BD release. Pretty appealing for V1. I'd be more interested in how much of a drop V2 gets. EDIT: Then again V2 has an event ticket. Guess we'll have to wait for V3. |

The most likely explanation symbv and I came up with, was that OreGairu managed to attract casual buyers who wanted to buy v1 at stores but found out it was gone from the shelves. With the fear of missing out on the "limited editions" (but we of course know that they rarely run out unless you're GaruPan v1/2 or something), they rushed over to an alternative such as Amazon/HMV and placed orders in. Back then... Amazon was showing, "Temporarily out of stock", but it could still be ordered for now. Perhaps it was also fear from missing out in the later volumes that made these casual buyers to buy out v2~7 as well, thereby driving up all the volumes at Amazon. |

So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old? I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them? I wonder how long people would put up with this. As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series. |

Only 2 out of the 20 BDs in the daily chart are non-anime !!! And DATE A LIVE !!!!! (insert Origami here lol lol) Now I notice I made a critical mistake in my Stalker analysis for Date A Live in my earlier writing. I said the final estimate of Date A Live as 5.2k but I forgot in Amazon there are two versions of the BD: the Amazon "limited editon" and the standard "limited edition" and I counted only the former. Take the standard edition into account as well (with estimate of 1.6) the actual total of Stalker estimate of BD/DVD for Date A Live is 6.8k -- this makes its position in today's chart more understandable. |

Yeah I was wondering about its position as well. The image I looked at for the rankings today it just had「デート・ア・ライブ Blu-ray 第1巻」, so Amazon must've just reported the total of both editions to Oricon. |

Now I notice there may be another victim of large scale troll orders.... Where is Samurai Bride vol.1 ??? The stalker estimate totals 2.3k and it was released on 26th, but where is it in the rankings??? |

The stalker estimate totals 2.3k and it was released on 26th, but where is it in the rankings??? I don't think we should jump to conclusions here. Yuyushiki 2 was expected to rank above it per the Stalker points for the BDs. Yuyushiki 2 didn't rank on the 26th which means Sumarai Bride had to be stronger on storefront to rank I would expect. Then the new June 28 releases drowned out most of the "weaker" June 26 releases. We have to look at the last 3 days of rankings before we make a conclusion here. With Crime Edge last week, it was I guess supposed to be "obvious" when it ranked below Shinsekai Yori 8 last week. EDIT: Although it can be entirely possible it has also suffered troll preorders... it's just less obvious because Yuyushiki 2 is a much stronger title than Shinsekai Yori 8 ever was. |

^ The reason why I suspect something fishy is because in terms of BD stalker points, Photokano is very close to Samurai Bride - 1.8k vs 1.7k, and both are even similar in its type of appeal - both have fan service galore from a big cast of girls, and yet here we see Photokano at #14 today while Samurai Bride is nowhere to be seen for all the 3 days it has been out.. Hmmm... |

Hmmm... Yes, but they are both on different release days. I don't think we can compare Sumarai Bride and Photokano directly. It may just be that the BD ranking threshold for the Top 20 on June 27 is a lot lower than it was on June 25 for the June 26 releases. Most of Sumarai Bride's sales would've been on June 25 & 26 I suspect. |

Samurai Bride 1 is in stock at amazon :) Another drop for me this season which is surprising as I love ecchi oppai but it was just too much of some things and not enough of a lot of things to hold my interest. Oppai alone is not enough... The ink splat stickers look fun though LOL |

^ Well, in the first season I did not buy the BD despite I love the character design and the sumi ink style of sakuga because of the lousy ending and too much space spent on "plot" which was not particularly engaging or interesting. At least all these problems are gone in this season and I also like the new characters (and the voice acting). It is one series that I am itching of buying.... Ejc said: I hope you are right. We'll see next Thursday. I just hope this doesn't happen almost every week. These damn suspected trolls have had a field day this season. |

Now with all the editions considered for Date A Live and HenNeko, the final Stalker estimates for the two works are: HenNeko *****5.4+1.3+0.3=8.0k Date A Live ***** 4.2+1.7+0.9=6.8k No prize for guessing right which one will end up selling more this week LOL |

Will you be doing another analysis for the other Spring 2013 titles that haven't been released yet? I'm very interested in what 2ch will predict as the Top 4 for Summer and their averages/medians in probably a week or so. I remember the Spring predictions was up in early April. |

What are the predictions for the Mushibugyo sales that are coming up soon? And do they even matter or is it aired in a more rating-orientated airing slot? Also have the manga sales increased at least a bit since the anime started? I wanna figure out if I can have at least a little hope for another season. Thanks if anyone takes the time to answer :) |

Volume 4 of Vividred Operation is beautiful! As always I love the postcard set and sketch book. The packaging is beautiful and so are the episodes! Get your pause button ready for the extra 'content'... Oh and the OST CD is awesome! Great soundtrack! Volume 5 cover, Rei! ![]() BTW, symbv, not sure if you're watching the Da Capo III threads anymore but they fixed the goof at the end of episode 7 with two Lulu-nees... The extra one in the line-up of 4 is gone, just a line-up of 3 now. Beautiful, simply beautiful work in this one and episode 8 is as you would expect... wow! Too bad it doesn't sell well, hopefully the game sales make up for it. |

Oh and while on the subject of BD differences, Muromi-san is now 13:35 per episode instead of 12:05 due to the addition of 1:30 of ED animation and the song Sea-Side 99 also used as an insert song in episode 2. For episodes 1-4 some nice animation and this song (present on the OST CD as well) is used so there is 55 minutes of episodes on disc 1 instead of the 48 minutes originally advertised. |

With these ranks... 35~40k is possible I think for v1. Whether from v2+ it drops back down to 13k or ends up a bit higher (15~20k) with the likelihood of having gained more female fans since S1... we'll see. |

Hi. I'd like to ask a generall question (I hope it's not out of place here), regarding the relation between Manga/LN-Sales. I've read on different occasions, that even Animes, that aren't selling especcially well, can become profitable, if the Manga/LN-Source-Material get's a significant boost. Now, my question ist, how does that work? I thought, Animes are produced by a studio, but what do they gain from a boost to the Manga/LN, which are (atleast I think that teye are) published by a different corporation? Do they get a percentage based payment from the Source-Material sales? Or in how far do they benefit of them? Sorry, if this has answered before. |

^^^ Usually the production committee includes the publisher. Often they are the main reason why the anime is made as they retain rights to it. It isn't like in Hollywood where the book rights are just sold off. They are usually ongoing series so the anime can be seen as an advertisement for the merchandise, originally this was toys for daytime anime for kids but now it is often for the manga, novels, magazines et al for ongoing publications. So there are shows like Chihayafuru which barely break even on disc sales but sell 400000 copies per issue 3 times a year so if they consider the anime to be a good advertisement that mostly pays for itself then you can get more seasons even if the disc sales don't point to it being a hit. |

Edrahil said: Let's go over how the business model works. In the case of midnight anime (not the shounen anime like Bleach, kid anime like PreCure or Pokemon, or family fare like Detective Conan or Sazae-san) an anime is made by a studio but produced by a production committee which funds the whole project. The members of the committee may have the studio and even the TV station which broadcast the anime, but the main players in the committee would consist of a media company like Aniplex or Bandai, which will be responsible for marketing and actual manufacturing/distribution of the discs, merchandise/game/figure sponsor like FujiRoad, and then for an adaptation work, the LN/manga/game publisher. I thought, Animes are produced by a studio, but what do they gain from a boost to the Manga/LN, which are (atleast I think that teye are) published by a different corporation? Depending on how much in proportion each member chips in and the initial agreement, each member will stand to profit or take loss from the project together but perhaps to different extent - and in the case of adaptation, because the initiative comes from the publisher (we know that it is the publisher who decides which work gets adapted to anime and which studio gets to do the work) we could expect that they may chip in more than other parties, and they would hope to recoup the higher share of cost sharing by increased sales of the source material. For the anime studio, they usually get a budget to work on the anime, and one would expect they would split the profit of disc sales with the media production company as well (in particular if the studio is part of the production committee). As for merchandise sales I think it depends on the initial agreement. For the manga/LN sale, the money may go only to the publisher, but they probably are the party which chipped in the most anyway - in fact quite a number of anime adaptations may even be meant not to make profit but as a marketing tool for the manga/LN/game. So when we say 'profitable even though the anime did not sell well' we are not looking at the studio, but from the point of view of the production committee, which is the group that actually funds the anime project, and its revenue would come from a number of sources: sales of original source material, sale of BD/DVD, sale of all kinds of merchandise/figure as well as spin-off projects like extra manga/novel or new games etc. |

Usually, you'll see some other company (Aniplex/Bandai) take the top spot, and then there's instances where the production committee takes a back spot to the station in the case of TBS-produced shows. Look at the order of the production committee since that'll tell you who chipped in the most money. You're right that the anime studio gets a budget to work on the anime and they'll get a slice of disc revenue, but the company(ies) that get the most revenue are the "Sales Agency" (発売元) who'll decide what goes on the discs and produce the content themselves. Usually this will be the same as the video disc distributor themselves, but there are examples where it's not (see TBS again). You may also see that VN publishers get a piece of the revenue as the "original creator" but they may not be a part of the production committee themselves. The Key anime series/movies have been shown to move a lot of discs, but Key themselves were never on any of the TV anime committees. It was the same for last year's KoiChoco as well. So to clarify: when it's said that an anime is profitable taking into account lower than average disc sales, look at who's on the committee and if they're getting a boost from some other sort of media. For Bandai shows, merchandise may be the big seller. For Kadokawa/Media Factory, it's LN/manga sales. For TBS shows, look at ratings and semi-disc sales. For Aniplex, it's solely disc sales. Just looking at disc sales alone is insufficient to judge whether or not a series is a success. Nichijou is commonly thrown around as a failure due to ~2k sales, but it sold 1 million copies in 2011, started a magazine that Kadokawa's still publishing, had its rights sold to NHK for broadcasting, selling a lot of merchandise, etc. At this point, we can't say that it's a failure based off of those poor disc sales, yet people still state it's a bomb. |

ultimatemegax said: TBS-produced shows is definitely controlled mostly by TBS itself. However, I always wonder how definite and strict we should follow the order of the billing in the production committee. Usually the anime would only show a make-up name for the production committee without listing all parties and so it obscures which party "chips in" the most. Kadokawa and Media Factory may stand out because both are huge LN publishers themselves and they also function as media production companies as well. Also as far as I know, those short 5-10 min short anime are often funded entirely by the publishers themselves. The only times where the publisher "chips in" the most money is from the Kadokawa and Media Factory production committees. Usually, you'll see some other company (Aniplex/Bandai) take the top spot, and then there's instances where the production committee takes a back spot to the station in the case of TBS-produced shows. Look at the order of the production committee since that'll tell you who chipped in the most money. Yes, there are talks of whether "Sales Agency" (発売元) takes too much from the disc sales and whether the TV stations take too much to broadcast the anime (which lead to some predicting broadcast may move increasingly to network environment) ultimatemegax said: I am not sure it is this restricted. In the Aniplex booth in Comiket I always see a lot of merchandise and side publications on sale, and I would say that Aniplex gets a share of the sales so it is not just "solely disc sales". So to clarify: when it's said that an anime is profitable taking into account lower than average disc sales, look at who's on the committee and if they're getting a boost from some other sort of media. The same can be said for works like Kami Nomi or Chihayafuru, where just the disc sales is clearly not the full story.Nichijou is commonly thrown around as a failure due to ~2k sales, but it sold 1 million copies in 2011, started a magazine that Kadokawa's still publishing, had its rights sold to NHK for broadcasting, selling a lot of merchandise, etc. At this point, we can't say that it's a failure based off of those poor disc sales, yet people still state it's a bomb. |

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series. |

Turns out so many waited for the ending before deciding whether to buy it or not. Just goes to speak how important the ending can have for the popularity of a series. The Stalker estimate for Gargantia v1 has moved from 8.0k to 9.2k in the last 10 hours. Amazing. |

How in the ever-loving hell did Gargantia go from nothing to top stuff in like an hour. This stalker stuff is an absolute joke. This must be like the absolute best episode ever in history or something. Like it was doing nothing whatsoever. You've gotta seriously be kidding me. I mean I find the show pretty decent but really? Is it because Gen Urobuchi finally wrote an episode and the fanboys came back out. Like this makes absolutely no sense to me unless it's another case of name>all. I'm done trying to explain any fan behavior when it comes to buying habits. Zero logic. What's worse is now I'm going to have to listen to even more of peoples bullshit about how shitty Valvrave is in comparison based on the strength of sales or some nonsense. I honest to god hate this fucking fandom. Blargh! Seriously now I'm wondering why they didn't just let him write every episode since his name is clearly what carried this show in the end. It's the only thing that tracks. It was doing amazing when he wrote the first episode and now is suddenly doing amazing when he writes again. If he did the whole damn thing I can only imagine. Such a joke.....it's shit like this that makes me legitimately start to worry about the future of anime again. Like what are you supposed to do when one persons name makes all the difference in the world between whether a show sinks or swims. It becomes a matter of trying to mix and match, which is sort of what I see companies like Aniplex doing and what's worse, it pretty much works. There are tiers of names, but it honest to god makes all the difference in the world. I guess if I'm to count my blessings it's good I kind of like the his stories cause at this point the anime scene is clearly his playground and that is simply that end of story. :/ |
