Can add Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 now to the list of saddest anime ever. My god that hit me hard in the feels.

Are you looking for what we thought was just the most depressing suicide inducing emo dump, or what we thought was depressing but still watchable and good? Because to me that's two different things.

Oreimo.

It's one thing when an anime aims to make you feel sad with its sad plot, it's another when the anime aims to make you feel happy with its supposedly joyful plot, but you feel sad instead.

I never cried after watching anime, but I think the most "depressing" for me was Ano Hana ;(

Also, you haven't seen "realistic" until you've watched 5 cm/s.
Seen it. Weaker execution compared to Shigatsu by far.

I can agree to that but the execution of an anime doesn't really mean much in the context of it's actual substance.

Out of all the depressing moments in anime I ever witnessed, this is the one that rises above all the others and it requires a long statement.

Monster: "The Cruelest Thing" (Episode 49)

If there's a more depressing tale in anime, I've yet to see it.

Now and Then, Here and There is the only anime I can think of that I have shed a man tear. Its genuine and brutal approach to a dystopian and war narrative truly brings out some of the saddest scenes I have watched in any medium. It has a strong degree of sincerity that I believe not many other series (anime or not) can match.

Second place for me would be Mononoke which is juxtaposes beauty and sorrow brilliantly. Most of the arcs struck a chord with me and Takanashi's score in the series really helps evoke a strong level of pathos.

Ano Hana is still the saddest anime that i've ever watched.. aside from that, One Piece also ironically the other "saddest anime" contender for me since it unintentionally made me cry the most..

Wolf's Rain! You become so attached to all of the characters, and most of them come to quite a bleak end.

Even though the ending is sad, it's a great anime because the conclusion still feels meaningful (not pointless sad, imo). In the end, there is also a tiny shred of hope for the future, even though it'll leave you bawling and ready to go find your very own wolf pack.

1. Berserk (not the Eclipse part, but the one where Guts decided to part ways with the Band of the Hawk, and Griffith has to stop him, but lost instead.. well Berserk in general is still a sad journey)

2. Chrono Crusade (screams "tragic" vibes all over the place, the demise in the last episode is...*silence*, also the epilogue that has followed was obviously catastrophic)

3. Texhnolyze (I don't need to explain this one, if you have not felt anything or remained neutral up until the end, then that's your own big problem)

Runner-ups:
- Akage no Anne portrays sadness in a realistic (and not idealistic) manner that it feels very natural and spontaneous
- An FMAB episode on animal transmutation (though all in all, FMAB is not a tragedy-natured anime, but just this one f***ing episode)
- No Longer Human (Aoi Bungaku series)
- Requiem for the Phantom, not of its superficial layer embedded in the plot, but the circumstances that shaped and molded the characters into their given state
- Bloody Yang... (ugh, I can still clearly remember that "nobody" bastard who pulled the trigger)
- Mardock Scramble with some of the character's its inhumane irrationality
- SAO (lol, don't blame me, I just really felt sad for Leafa-chan)

Most saddest I have ever watched until now would of course be Angel Beats, purple just disappear after they have completed what that wanted to do which they could not while being alive. Especially felt heart crushing pain when Yui dissappears. And what's the fuck with the epilogue, the MC's wish was to help people so he was left behind ?? Now what he is something like a gate keeper where dead people come to fulfil their wishes and he has to make it come true. Man hated the epilogue totally.

Though I loved all the characters in angel beats, my favorite was Yui.
