I guess a little could be fine, but I'm tired of all the cleavage and panty shots...
It doesn't mater if romance is the main focus like Spice & Wolf or Horimiya, or if it's just a side plot like in Katanagatari or Baccano!
Anime or manga, either is good.
Don't you think "Oh, not again" when you hear an anime start with cicadas?

I side with that! Both are amazing, but I think Hachimitsu to Clover would work better :) Even though Nodame Cantabile is one of my favs, I recommend the second one more!

Those are some quality suggestions. Working was fun, Tatami Galaxy was just my kind of weird awesomeness. I will skip the war one, but the rest look very promising. Thanks.

I love finding less known manga, sometimes there are real hidden gems.

If you haven't seen Nodame since your earlier post, I'll give that another push. AFAIK, it's only available outside Japan by less than legal means. Sony once financed an excellent dub from the Ocean group in Vancouver, too, and ran it on its Crackle service for a year or two. Now it's gone from all services in the US. DK about other parts of the world.

Nodame Cantabile was a veritable franchise in Japan beginning with a manga that was adapted to anime and live-action on Japanese television. Both have two sequels as well; the live-action sequels were released as movies. The anime version has a 22-episode original series and two, 12-episode sequels.

The J-Drama is on AsianCrush: https://www.asiancrush.com/series/017559s/nodame-cantabile but I much prefer the anime. There's a lot of "hamming" in Japanese comedy that I dislike. I grew tired of Ueno Juri as Nodame as the story progressed.

On the other hand,

The thing I dislike about Asian drama is ... the drama. You know how in manga and anime there are always exaggerated expressions and situations? Well, it works when it's drawn or animated, but it looks absolutely ridiculous when actors for some reason try to imitate that in dramas... Your photo is a great example.

I'd recommend you some manga, but they're pretty much 90% shoujo...
Why don't you want any shoujo recs? Most of them don't even have anything considered as ecchi regardless if romance is in it or not.

There are some shoujo manga I really like, so please go ahead, I will check them out.
As for the reason... Since shoujo romance is so readily available, I wanted different recommendations. Also, often it tends to focus too much on how dashing the male leads are, and as a guy, I don't care too much about that.

I second Nodame Cantabile. Especially don't forget to watch further than just the first season (afterwards is Nodame Cantabile Paris Chapter -> Nodame Cantabile Third Season Special -> Nodame Cantabile Third Season).

I would also recommend Library Wars, although it feels a bit shoujo-ish, I think overall it is still targeted towards an older audience. Make sure to watch the movie (Library Wars: The Wings of Revolution) after the tv series.

I would also recommend Planetes. I don't want to spoil anything, but it is amazing to see their character growth and change. But the anime focuses on more than just romance, so keep that in mind.

Oh okay, great! Thinking about how the demographic is commonly associated with romance does seem understandable though.

Your lists are locked to private so idk what you've read already... but here, gonna try to add some non-shoujo if I remember any too
  • Toilet-bound Hanako-kun - not really much romance in this spooktacular shounen, but the chemistry is HARD to ignore. same goes for the godtier art.
  • Beauty and the Beast of Paradise Lost - i just got into this and it is a serious page-turner. Kaori Yuki rocks
  • Fairy Cube - same case as above, seriously, Kaori Yuki ROCKS
  • Kitchen Princess - surprisingly really heartfelt and amazing even if i admit it's a bit tropey at times. still cannot believe this got a sequel but never got adapted to anime once ever. also i like the recipes
  • Zodiac P.I. - a romance blooms over the course of several mystery solving with some literal supernatural hints
  • Buzzy Noise - this manga's pacing is as chill as the awesome volume book covers
  • Princess Jellyfish - ok i get that this is primarily a comedy but how on earth does this not have the romance tag lol
  • Yumeiro Patissiere - the fact that this awesome mouth-watering dessert cooking duel series has never been licensed in English is baffling to me. definitely recall more emphasis on working together as a team and cooking against other teams in the beginning, but i'm sure the romance will come by eventually (still haven't finished reading this yet even tho it's been years since i've knew about it, what am i doing)
  • Battle Angel Alita - a few romantic subplots in between a whole lot of satisfying as hell violence
  • Kobato. - this manga is just too sweet ♥. apparently the TV anime is just as good from what i hear, gotta make time for it soon
  • Cardcaptor Sakura - same as above, CLAMP is just great at innocent sweetheart MCs. also love the fantasy card collecting in nearly every chapter.
  • Saint Tail - this one makes stealing and learning magic tricks look really fun.
  • Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne - quickly became a page-turner for me and plot twists are all over the place halfway through so it's even better. gotta root for the MC too
  • Full Moon wo Sagashite - can't tell which one hurts more, this one or the above one. i apologize if you're one who is easily prone to tears. really love all the thoughtful discussions on life too.
  • Pita-Ten - don't let the sugary sweet art style and book covers fool you, once again i apologize
  • I Am Here! - this one warms my heart it's too sweet and wholesome and inspires me to be more open too
  • Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle - despite all the crazy plot twists this adventure-heavy manga should still have a romance tag
  • Astra: Lost in Space - same with this one, though i guess you can actually argue that the romance isn't that central. i recall maybe one censored bath scene but still pretty sweet though, please read it!!!
  • Spirit Circle - ok, maybe a hard sell here as there is one panty shot and a few uncensored nipple shots, but it should say a lot that i absolutely adore this manga despite being a well-known prude and ecchi-hater around these parts
edit: crap i somehow forgot to mention Tomo-chan is a Girl!

Oh yeah, and +1 to Library Wars too. Happy reading!!

Haven't checked out the rest yet, but Tomo-chan was a blast to read, it's exactly the kind of story I was looking for. The characters are fantastic and the lack of unnecessary forced drama is such a huge plus.
