People who hate or simply dislike frieren, are there plausible reasons? Like, sousou no frieren is not my top1, I like it a lot, but it's not my favorite, actually it's my top4. I was thinking while reading the negative reviews of sousou no frieren here on the site but all the reviews are too stupid, like there are people complaining about the animation and scenery saying that it is bad. Honestly, can anyone who doesn't like frieren really find the animation and, for example, the soundtrack bad?, I doubt that Sousou no Frieren (just an example) would be bad at everything, it's kind of idiotic to think that Sousou no Frieren is bad at everything. Like I don't like Kimetsu no Yaiba, but I think KNY's animation and soundtrack are phenomenal. What I mean is: who doesn't like sousou no frieren could give me a plausible explanation of the possible defects? And those who like it can also answer me telling me some flaws that you see in this anime? (DETAIL: mention the defect but also give an explanation, don't just say "I don't like the story", say why.)

(I just want to understand what might be considered bad for most people in sousou no frieren, because I truly believe that this anime is perfect in everything. I can't find any mistakes, even my favorite anime (3-gatsu no lion) I could understand "possible" flaws, but when I think about sousou no frieren I can't imagine any flaws... It's the only anime where I think like that.)

I can already tell those same takes you found in those low star reviews will be seen in this thread. The only difference is the outlet for which people can use their critics.

@gloozed I just wanted to read a negative review of sousou no frieren that makes sense... Like I've read negative reviews of 3-gatsu no lion, and some of them seem really convincing and might make sense. But I've never seen a negative review of sousou no frieren that's well-crafted.

Let’s see if you’ll find better luck in the forums section of MAL rather than the actual reviews under the anime.

It's pointless asking that as it all boils down to subjectivity.

Also, reasons for liking and disliking something are broadly the same - plot and characters. Those are core aspects of every series, so if you liked them, you would like the series, and vice versa.

The people you’re describing just aren’t the target audience—it’s not that complicated. People can rate or complain all they want, but a small minority with ‘critiques’ doesn’t make something universally flawed. A personal issue (a ‘U problem’) isn’t a valid criticism, especially when only a few people are saying it. Sousou no Frieren is phenomenal, so why worry if some people don’t like it? They’re entitled to their opinion, but their negativity often just reignites itself in cycles unless you have the time to entertain the opinions of ‘sheep.’

For example, I don’t like JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Hunter x Hunter, and I’m undecided about Jujutsu Kaisen. I enjoyed the first season of JJK, but the second season felt like a chore, and I kept reaching for my phone. Maybe I’m not their target audience, and that’s okay. I’m not going to make a whole thread about why I didn’t connect with those anime.

The point is, why overthink Sousou no Frieren not resonating with a small amount of people? It’s simply not for them, and that’s fine. It’s not like it’s a hidden gem not getting enough love, it’s a big name. It can afford a few uninterested eyes.

~I just want to know your opinions and cons regarding the anime. Please do not spew hate here.

These are the reasons I think people dislike the frieren anime:
1. Expectation: Frieren became very successful and popular, so I guess people have high expectations when watching it. put it with a storyline that is not your typical shounen. people might think it's overrated and doesn't deserve praise and criticise in a way that doesn't make sense to someone who takes their time to understand it
2. Storyline: The frieren storyline is very unique. The plot is slow most of the time, which is a good thing and explains the value of appreciating the present, and it can seem dull. Frieren is a very good anime, but not many people will be able to understand it. You really need to observe and take in the episode after watching it.

These are some of the reasons I think it's disliked so much, and it shouldn't be this way. I hope the anime community can be smarter and know how to appreciate a good work.

If someone doesn't enjoy a show, they'll give it a low score. I tried watching 86 for multiple times but couldn't get past episode 5. Heavy mecha action just isn't my thing. So, no matter how good Frieren is, there'll be some people who'll not enjoy it. But, of course, there are some people who hate a show just for the sake of hating it. Just ignore them. Frieren is highly acclaimed and top 1 in MAL and probably it'll stay in top for a long time unless season 2 tops it.

As for my opinion, Frieren is not my favorite. I've actually given it a 9. The Mage Exam arc isn't as good as the rest of the show imo. But, I have no complains about Frieren being top 1.

There will always be critics and haters for every piece of fiction out there. As for Frieren: Beyond Journey's PEAK, some hate on it blindly cause of how popular and well received the anime and manga are or for how the anime is ranked #1 on MAL. Not a new thing tbh.

You're right about that

Frieren: Beyond Journey's PEAK isnt my best animanga oat. Doesn't even come in t10 in both categories. But I personally have it a 10 (anime and manga wise) because it deserves it 100%. I am a fan and I think it deserves the spot of #1 anime on MAL. There are shows I don't and didn't end up enjoying because I could not resonate with them or they were just bad generally or to me alone. I believe that's how anime fans should strive to be. Not throwing a tantrum like a child because your most beloved anime isn't #1 on an app. C'mon.

it's because of individual personality bro nothing else. personality is considered unique to a person, meaning that each individual has their own distinct pattern of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that sets them apart from others; it's a combination of factors like genetics, life experiences, and environment that create a unique personality for every individual.

Here is a tip, don’t follow MAL general rating and the reviews, they don’t accurately represent the anime.

Best advice I can give you, watch what you like and don’t worry about what anyone thinks of it.

Merry Christmas

Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

These are probably the main reasons why I don't like it as much:

I can't root for the characters. Frieren's goal to find Aureol and to see Himmel again is a weird antithesis to her goal of living in the present, but the story never really comments on that. While I can sympathize with her, wanting to speak with dead people just to say goodbye or to indulge in old memories feels degenerate.
Everything is so vague that I can only guess what anyone's motivation really is. Is Frieren still dedicating her life to hunt down demons or what exactly are her long-term goals? As for Fern and Stark, they barely have any goals for their journey other than to stick with Frieren like their masters told them. What do these two want to do with their life? On top of that the characters barely show any emotions and regularly complain about their own lack of excitement during the journey. And all the cringy, shounen-typical character reactions make me really unsure what about the characters is meant to be genuine and what not.

Aside from the motivation problem, I wholeheartedly hate Frieren's world and its approach to fantasy. It feels like a parody, everything is so intentionally generic, much more than any isekai I've ever seen. Nothing really fits together. The power of magic is so disproportional to the slow, modest lives of everyone we meet. Maybe it's just on me, but I can't make sense of anything the author writes.

I'm OK with fiction not having to make perfect sense, but Frieren relies too heavily on its vague backstory that this overdose of tropes completely throws me out of the experience.

That's fine of course. I mean the comments of people who dimenish something because they don't understand it. Example: if someone doesn't like shounen, they might sum it up to "those edgy anime where they do nothing but fight" or slice of life they say "nothing happens, no plot" etc. Taking the core essence of something to describe its entirety is way too common today.

1) Nothing is perfect or flawless, so let's stop with the exaggerated Frieren glaze.

2) Opinions are subjective, someone maybe doesn't like the fanstasy setting or the pacing or whatever it is. It doesn't matter whether you disagree with that or not, it's their opinion

3) Some critics I can think of (as someone who would rate it a 8,5) are:

-the pacing at times. Especially the middle part of the season, when they met Kraft, Sein and that old acquaintance of Frieren. Those episodes felt very slow and dragged to me, also the beginning of the season was at times slow. You can call me a shonentard if you want but I enjoyed the mage exam arc the most by far.

-Stark and Fern are tropey characters (didn't matter to me but Frieren gets so much glaze for being "refreshing" or "different than other anime" when that's really not the case). And I didn't enjoy Ferns character that much to be honest.

-and lastly I just think the writing is slightly overrated (still very good, it's just the amount of dick sucking it receives, makes it slightly overrated to me). The flashbacks to Frierens past and parallels to the present are great and highlight Frierens development. However, it's not as groundbreaking as it's made out to be and it's definitely not the best writing in anime.

There's probably more I could criticise if I thought about it longer, these are just some criticisms people could have.

In conlusion: Frieren is peak but opinions exist.

not a hater but i dont really like it either. dont know if it has been said already because i aint reading through all these replies. just here to give my two cents on the topic:

while i do think that the show had a pretty strong start (interesting premise, beautiful animation and soundtrack, nice art style and character designs), i feel like it failed to really explore the topic to the fullest. the drama felt shallow, most conflicts felt forced and/or unnecessary for the „plot“ or rather themes. fern was extremely annoying most of the times and in the latter half of the show a tournament arc got introduced which also didnt have much to do with the main themes and it went on for way too long literally the only good thing in the tournament arc was that one action scene where she fights against herself. and this show in particular shouldnt be carried by action…

so overall, while some aspects of this show are top tier, it fails where it really shouldnt which brought the score down to 5 or 6 dont really remember

hmm I donno why even bother reading critiques I just pick a genre according to my mood and watch it even it's a 6 rated show if I like I like it , if bored drop it and move on ...

it's a healthy conversation to have ofcourse about which and what's you liked or disliked in a show but hey it's upto their own personal opinions and shld respect it ,idk I never get bothered if some rando who I don't even know his face gives a negative critique to a show.

I doubt there are people who hate frieren outside of bait. I think people are just irritated at the praise it gets. I mean I love frieren as much as the next guy but it seems more like a nice short story than a full series that deserves a 10/10.

idk if i count as somebody who dislikes frieren, cause i actually enjoyed the show quite a lot (i gave it a 9), but i definitely don't think that it's one of the best anime ever and that's for one big reason.

i think that, while everything in the show is executed to near perfection, the actual concept and basis of the whole story is kinda uninspired. aside from the idea of them going on a journey after the main guy has been defeated (which has been done before), it's really just a basic fantasy anime with, don't get me wrong, amazing characters, great visuals, and immaculate vibes. i know that there's like a sub-plot that consists of frieren trying to figure out how emotions work and wanting to reconnect with himmel, but i personally think that the show wasn't as creative on the base level as i want from a "best of all time" anime.

once again, i am not a frieren hater, i just don't think that it's the second coming of christ and i believe it does have its own flaws.

It can afford a few uninterested eyes.

lmao i kinda felt the same about jjk s2- i loved the slice of lifeish aspects and the character moments. while the animation and action was hype, each episode just felt like "oh, another dramatic fight between two characters who have had like 30 mins total screen time and one of them is gonna die now"

maybe ppl hate Frieren bc it's hella popular and some non-anime fans are watching it. so taking that in consideration, I have 2 conclusions:

1. they simply don't like "mainstream" anime get into non-anime fans.
2. they are way happier (sometimes kind of cocky) if the anime is kinda niche/ non popular/ not that successful with the general audience so they can be bragging about having better taste in anime. that "I'm better than you bc I understood Evangelion on the 1st watch" "I have a more refined taste in anime that you" kind of anime elitist's opinion

btw I'm talking from the Latin America community's perspective, I see a lot of ppl shitting on Frieren bc of those reasons, so idk if it's the same on the English speaking community

I love that your title of this discussion says that you need an urgent answer lmao you're so funny.

I think people simply dislike that the show is more of a slice of life concerning the fantasy genre. seems like a weird reason to not like a show, but. some people don't like slice of life. it's also kind of a slow show, which some people don't like.

I just stopped reading the negative reviews because, in general, the positive reviews address these same issues in a more intelligent way.

My prime example of a mixed/bad review is one from Demon Slayer. The person goes on and on about they are not Demons, but vampires. They marked season 1 as completed. This means they supposedly saw "vampires" with mouths on their hands, "vampires" with spider bodies or heads, and "vampires" that put people in cocoons to go "slurp them up" after they were digested.

In no way have any of the negative reviews I have read laid out a true reason for why the series or movie deserved a low rating. Common themes are that the OST is the only redeeming quality, the DUB was off-putting, the manga was better, the animation quality made it look old, the characters were one-dimensional (without listing any in particular), and so on.

I can't stand romance anime but have enough brain cells to not go posting terribly written reviews saying it was horrid because I decided to watch something I have no interest in. On top of that, marking it as Completed when I never watched it through to the end because it didn't hold my attention is even more disingenuous.

I didn't like Rokka at all by the time it was done, but I still found enough things intriguing enough to give it marks for some positive things. I guess in the end, I'm saying most of the weebs, purists, and elitists (or whatever they want to call themselves) should be ignored if they are going to just shit on something with no consideration or mention of any of the positive attributes.

It's boring af + I don't have a fetish for elves. Movement of the earth got me hooked for 11 episodes in a single day and it's almost all only talking.
Caveman draw anime girl on cave, Caveman happy. Cityman angry at cave drawing, Caveman throw club at Cityman.

epic candy :

You ask a fair question- but just as you point out Frieren can’t possibly be bad at EVERYTHING; (I agree it isn’t)- but you also have to admit it isn’t GREAT at everything either.

And that is the problem.
But look how it’s rated.
It has poorly defined characters, an overpowered MC who is such a walking pile of tropes and cliches; walking around talking with no dramatic tension; it starts out with a poorly defined purpose then decides it’s a battle anime- which would be fine if there was more fighting.

WAY TOO MANY CHARACTERS- like that older guy who fucks off after like two episodes; it introduces then abandons Stark at its critical most important dungeon/magic test arc; its magic system is poorly defined which would be okay if it didn’t insist on there being so many rules, and then it just contradicts itself by introducing things like PHOTOGRAPHY for plot convenience for like one episode then never shows it again. Which is lazy writing.

On top of all this the characters aren’t even interesting to look at. They look just like the story feels- DULL. Frieren is basically a fat elf with frumpy clothes and walks around with a blank expression most of the time. Sorry that’s not interesting or inspiring, and anime is a visual medium- nothing about its appearance either background art or characters is interesting or captivating. Fern is similar- frumpy and boring both visually and as a character. The English VA for Stark breaths some life into an otherwise archetype of a character; I had to watch the English dub after halfway because reading all the inane, dull dialogue on the Sub was excruciating.

See my review where I explain everything wrong with it in depth. Some things it did well: the action scenes in episode 9-10 (about) where they fought the demons was alright. The Magic Test arc in the dungeon was okay in parts- (although ruined by so much endless talking!) and the final test with the loli elf chick at least made me chuckle. But WAY too many characters. Why so many? Just a total mess.

I'm not claiming it's the worst anime ever made and I didn’t give it a 1. I should have given it a 1, but unlike all the people who lied about it being so perfect; at least I was honest about my score.
