@joemaamah both Trigun and Outlaw Star came out in 1998 even. And can you tell me a bit about them including Excel Saga? I've also seen how people compare the other two to Cowboy Bebop (also 1998) which i loved.
@TRC_Randy I have a complete review for Excel Saga on my profile you might want to check out for the lowdown. If you like crazy, nutty comedies I couldn't recommend it enough. I just rewatched it earlier this year, for the first time in maybe 20, and it still holds up well for me today. A tale of world domination gone horribly wrong, in the most amusing ways.

Trigun and Cowboy Bebop are interwined in many peoples minds as they were the first animes on Adult Swim here in the US, but they are so diffferent. Trigun is a sci-fi space western with a quirky MC and strong supporting characters. Lots of comedy and a good dollop of drama as well. The art design is very 90's as is the animation quality. Sometimes it awesome and other times...well... Still much more often better, than cost cutting. I found it easily forgivable as I find the narrative so engaging. I own the box set and have seen it multiple times dubbed and subbed. Both are excellent. But Johnny Yong Bosch's English adaptation of Vash the Stampede was a VA tour de Force that people still speak of with reverence.

Don't let anyone tell you different; Cowboy Bebop is still GOAT. Everything about is masterful- the art, animation, characters, story and direction were all way ahead of their time, and still hold up well against anything that's come out since. It's sci-fi about a group of bounty hunters that chase across the solar system, just trying to pay the bills. All the characters have kind of shady backstories that get examined bit by bit in various episodes. And the soundtrack is amazing. I hated jazz until I saw Cowboy Bebop. Now it's probably what I listen to most.

I've been watching anime for 60 years. Cowboy Bebop is my #1, and Trigun my #2. That sums things up nicely.

Outlaw Star is another sci-fi title from the era, and another Adult Swim alumnus. It doesn't have nearly as good production quality as the other two, but it's still very watchable. What it really has going for it are great characters and a good mystery/treasure hunt narrative. It also has my favorite catgirl of all time in it. She's so off the wall, and gets stuck in so many goofy situations. But she's a total bad-ass when she needs to be.

This is a sci-fi quartet that won't do you wrong. I'd go as far to say you haven't yet earned your otaku badge until you've checked them all out.

Kinda sad to think that anime will never look like that again.

I'm level on MAL-Badges. View my badges.

i've earned 1/3 of the badge then. I mean these shows are from prime Sunrise and prime Madhouse so i do have considerable expectations.
