I'm weird, throwing Outlaw Star into the best first episode. Cowboy Bebop ndrever had much story to me.

doubt it, i dropped outlaw star after watching the first ep.

i would say Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu or blood+ are good runner ups.

but the best Just has to be golden boy or GTO.

I'll say Kino's Journey. The first episode set the stage perfectly for the rest of the series, establishing the tone, the style, and the main characters all while telling a self-contained story that exemplified the main theme. If I ever wanted to show a single episode to someone that believed all anime was drivel, it would probably be either that or episode one of Mushishi.

Ghost in the Shell, Trinity Blood, Higurashi, Black Lagoon, Death Note, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo and Basilisk all left the best first impressions on me so far. I may have forgotten a few...like Baccano!

Considering the anime that I've watched so far, I think it was Samurai Champloo that really caught my mind with such excellent fights. I unfortunately wasn't able to finish it due to the helpful and lovely Wikipedia spoiler. :/ Oh well.

I noticed that not only the first ep not only discuss the storyline of the anime, but it also bring you the motivation to continue watching it.

Then according to you, what is the best anime first ep you have seen?

For me, it is definitely Ga Rei Zero = )
Reason? It was a really strong ep with intense music during the fighting parts. Also it creates a mystery on the first ep which makes you want to watch more to find the answer.

we have the same opinions... it was definitely something that made me get hooked to the anime...

you really think so? Elfen Lied's start wasn't good because it would turn off SO many viewers, code geass first ep was so boring I dropped the show 3 eps in...I might pick it back up...but seriously Code Geass has a boring beginning.

I don't know who agrees but Gantz had a great first ep. Gives you a taste of what it's about, gives you a great side character, and makes you feel weak alone and depressed. I'm not going to continue with the series because I heard it goes downhill.

Second this. Samurai Champloo hooked me more than Cowboy Bebop ever could...might pick up Champloo again...

As for death note, that first ep would be captivating for someone who was a first time viewer, but I had read the description and new the premise like the back of my hand, so the first ep was a drag becuase it was just a rehash of what I knew. The second ep was golden though. :)

But I still think gantz had the best first ep

I'd have to go with Gurren Lagann. Here I was, going about my boring daily life, when Gurren Lagann came along and said "Hey, let's ram two herds of pig-moles into each other with enough force to launch us through the ceiling and into the world beyond!"
