I'm just stuck after watching ep 9, not wanting to continue. I waited for the show to be mostly over before starting it so I could binge it, but now... I'm forcing down eps begrudgingly, which isn't good at all. Which is weird, right? I watched the original many years ago, and I can remember bits and pieces of the original adaptation while watching this new "and improved" version. So... why am I so... bored? My first thought was that I'd already seen all of this, and that, by retracing my steps, my enjoyment is much lower the second time around. But... when I watch clips from the original (obviously there's bias/nostalgia helping to fuel it), I'm engaged. So it also makes me cross off the idea that I've matured to the point where watching the male fanservice avatar that is Holo engage with 'bland' Lawrence isn't good anymore...

So I started paying attention more in the last couple episodes, and I'm coming to the conclusion that, like some of the others above me have said, this version is rather soulless. As if Holo has been stripped bare of her fiery temper/playfulness, and Lawrence has lost his backbone, and IMO is almost like the self-insert for the viewer at this point instead of a proper character. I don't even really think the visuals have improved much, honestly. It's too... glossy, the lighting/shading feels off (too dark), and the character models... oh boy, the character models irk me in a way I can't properly put into words. It's like... they don't fit in with the background art properly? It's not to the degree of having CGI models with 2D environments, but... like the characters are too bright, when everything around them is so dark/dull by comparison?

I wish I could better describe my problems with the remake, but I'm no critic, and hell... it's been SO LONG since the original that it's pretty hard for me to compare with my crappy memory. But that's pretty much where I stand. Not that this remake is 'bad' per say... and hopefully, as it goes on (because hopefully they full adapt the LN this time), maybe I'll grow to prefer it. I do remember thinking S2 of the original was pretty lackluster, so... maybe it'll rebound. I'm hoping it does.

Edit: I made it sound like I'm going to drop it, but I'm in for the long haul. I've watched much worse, even just looking at this season alone lol. Will probably get through it during the transitional period into the Fall 2024 season.

@Andrewapps You have some examples of scenes that are not as good as the OG?

Too much anime, too little time. Don't want waste time watching a remake of something I watched nearly 2 decades ago which is worse.

@mechian Pretty much the entire first episode. From Holo's first introduction, to her transformation, to her reappearance... OG wins out. Also, in the OG Spice and Wolf, there is an original character that doesn't exist in the source material, whom replaces Yarei. IMO, Chloe is better than Yarei, being an actual character instead of an exposition dump. Now... if Yarei comes back later on, and actually IS important? Well, I'm only speaking about what's been adapted thus far.

Otherwise... I'll say Lawrence's character as a whole. Instead of being Holo's partner, her equal... instead he is almost always getting 1-up'd by her, and in the rare instances that he does get one over on Holo, she just shrugs it off. Which, mind you, I have 0 problem with. Instead, Lawrence should be the same way. The dude is supposed to be 25, but in the remake, he acts like a teenager being led around by his mother instead of a grown man bantering and hashing issues out with his lover. In the original, sure, Holo still has the advantage over Lawrence most of the time due to her insane amount of life experience + her abilities as a deity, but the pair act like a proper team and bounce off of one another more naturally, like a true mature couple.

Again, all my opinion.

You got to love the OG's season 1 OP.

Yes, it's more faithful to the LNs. I'm still on Episode 15, but it seems they'll give shorter runtime to what og s2 covered which seemed rushed. Ep 19 seems to be new stuff.

Although some have criticised how this was directed, I appreciate a few changes. Such as showing a church and a bishop on some scenes where they are talking about the Church. This aspect is an improvement over the OG.

Holo's breasts are a little bit larger in this new adaptation. But og Norah is more attractive than her counterpart in this adaptation.

ETA: finished it yesterday evening, 8th of July 2024

The og added Chloe but omitted the material for LN vol 4, which is the final arc of this season. The priestess Elsa resembles Chloe, and I think this new adaptation ended in a bang, unlike the OG's season season.

Honestly, I think we should all appreciate this remake, despite the stupid things I will get into in a bit. This remake really dedicates to the original work where the previous anime in 2008 did not cover, they have full intention now to cover more plots until the very ending the way I see it (there are many hints already in this remake which I will not get into since they will likely be spoilers). Despite the good efforts, the stupid things about this remake would be the clear drop in the art quality and also the emotional aspects between the lines the characters say. With no doubt, the original anime in 2008 had so much more emotions as the plots unfold and the art quality was much better, in my humble opinion. As they try to cover more of the original work (light novel) I am guessing this is the loss they have to take, to me this loss of quality seemed a bit too much, but I'll struggle and try to stay (keep watching) this remake until the end for now, because SnW is truly a great series. I've read the LN 4-5 times from start to finish so far, and it gets me super excited every time, so much that I bought/ added the Japanese LNs all volumes to my collections.

Edit: I personally hated they had ClariS for the ED, don't get me wrong I LOVE ClariS (just look at my pp lmao) but that is definitely the wrong vibe to this anime >:/

Watched the OG a few years ago and am enjoying the remake just fine. People talking about the 2008 version having better animation aesthetics are just wearing rose-tinted glasses. Subjectively they have a right to their opinions, but objectively there's absolutely nothing wrong with the 2024 remake's animation style, the nitpickers just don't like the change personally. The 2024 remake buries the 2008 version in terms of overall narrative by being a more accurate adaptation of the series in print, regardless of what 2008 die-hard fans say about the remake. Especially when we get season 2 of the remake, which will outstrip the 2008 version's narrative which ended before the source material and deviated from it somewhat as well.
