@_Yotsugi_ Hard disagree. Oshi No Ko set itself up from the first episode as being this introspection and condemnation of the entertainment industry as a whole. Instead, Ruby spends an inner monologue every two episodes reminding us that he is out for the murderer of his mom and also the entertainment industry is toxic af, and then the show turns around and contradicts itself. It's poorly written. I could tolerate the contradictions if they were more misdirection that later got revealed for what they were, but the show never makes any attempt at implying that what we are seeing is not the whole story. Instead, every reminder of how scummy the entertainment industry is devolves into a SoL show except it's just a bunch of teen idols that the industry will simply chew up and spit out when they fall off. I will give OnK the benefit of noting that it had some balls in showing that with one character, but that entire arc turned around way too quickly. She fell off for what, 3 years? Most actors go at least double that before they get another role.
@SentiOnikawa your only going off of episode 1 and second off it does show that we don’t see everything it’s in the manga and further in the show with him trying to look through contacts plus we don’t know the dad. Till it’s reveal later. It does that well. Also the spit and chew is true and meant for episode 1 and how she had talent and was meant as a stepping stone suppose to now have an insane amount of lore. Also reason she got many roles is due to the fact she was popular many actors who find success gets a lot more roles Chris Pratt for example is in a lot of stuff. Rest of season contradicts this so watch rest of show please

@_Yotsugi_ I watched the entire season, so no, I'm not going off episode 1 alone. Also, an adaptation should stand on its own. Saying "oh, well, the book/comic/game shows this" is a non-sequitor. I also don't get why you mentioned Ruby going through the contacts and us not knowing the dad. I brought up Ruby having his inner monologues as a point about how the show insists on things it never follows up on. Improve your reading comprehension before you try to argue with others.

A good reveal entails consistency and relevance to the overall plot. Higurashi had a good mystery mixed with a smaller supernatural aspect. Re:Re also had a good mystery, though I heard the ending sucked butt. Sumemrtime Rendering was also a fantastic mystery whose central antagonist was its only shortcoming. The point is, a good mystery never strays too far from the main plot, but also never hesitates to take an episode or two to indulge itself. OnK takes too much time indulging itself in idol and SoL stuff and when it does try to regain its message and/or murder mystery focuses, it stumbles right back into the SoL and idol stuff as if terrified that its audience will lose interest if it doesn't jingle the keys every 5 seconds.

If with "spit and chew" you mean how the industry tends to chew people up and spit them out, the show did it terribly. Ai gets her big break, but it's on the backs of far more talented people and only as a result of others effectively throwing themselves to the wolves on her behalf. She's a D-list celebrity at best in terms of actual talent, but her bandwagon of supporters make unrealistically-easy deals with directors and staff to get her pushed to the moon. In the real-world, she'd get a bit role every now and then regardless of how many talking babies she popped out.

Ai wasn't popular outside the idol sphere, and that in itself is already a fairly niche audience. Her struggle for relevance in the mainstream was like a wrestler trying to make the same leap. The reason why 99% of wrestlers never go from in-ring performances to acting isn't just down to looking good, otherwise wrestling as a performance sport would be dead nowadays. You also require talent and charisma. Being able to sell someone on the idea that you're someone else is key. Ai didn't get a ton of roles. She had a handful and only got pushed because she managed to make enough of an impact, but it ultimately fell back onto her being an idol that pushed her into the big leagues. I mean, let me tell you about the amount of idols in Japan who end up doing adult photoshoots and the like just to promote themselves or their group. It's insane.

Idol culture in Japan is far more scummy than OnK lets on, and its ultimate failure is that it only does a very shallow attempt at exposing the industry for what it is. I don't mind shows that want to stretch my suspension of disbelief and even have fun (I loved Paripi Koumei and can't wait for a second season, and I'm a stan for Starlight Revue even if I hate the mobile game), but I can't tolerate a show that presents concepts that challenges its viewers and then refuses to elaborate on them any further. It's what SAO did with its NervGear, then the seed, and then the Underworld. I would even hazard saying that Oshi No Ko is the SAO of idol anime. It looks pretty and wants to say something, but there isn't any depth to its larger narrative and what it does say is already common knowledge and not worth listening to.

"You've faced many life-and-death situations. But that does not make you an adult. Finding more fallen-out hairs on your pillow, watching your favorite stuffed-bread disappear from the convenience store... the accumulation of those little despairs is what makes a person an adult."-Nanami Kento

"When a piece of media is bad, it's much easier to nitpick the less significant things because they're seen as a part of the problem. Alternatively, it becomes more difficult to nitpick something like a masterpiece because even the flaws are seen as contributing to the overall quality of the media." -Paraphrasing Mauler
