@RobertBobert Not too sure about that. A lot of recent romcom manga are like that.
@Yuu_Kanzaki Yes, but in general, shoujo manga is much more fond of a plot where you look like a nerd while your love interest is the second coming of Marlon Brando. Male-focused manga prefers to make protagonists simply “average”, since men usually rate their appearance higher.

Better more "dark and/or edgy" titles than another shit where mc goes to japanese school and joins some club. Or another love triangle drama romance.

And to clarify 1 thing - I DO NOT self insert into anything (books, games, anime), so please go away (would use different words, but I don't want to be banned) with stupid accusations like "you must hate the world" or "it's power fantasy and you wants to be like mc" - nope in both cases.

@RobertBobert I find the opposite to be true. Shojo manga tends to have the girl sits at a "lower class" than the guy or to make the guy handsome yet very cold rather than the guy being an outcast of the class.

But I read too little shojo to come up with an opinion backed up by real data.

@Yuu_Kanzaki I don’t know how it is now, but at one time in shoujo the archetypes of tomboys and boring nerds were very popular precisely because of the Japanese belief that non-girly women are black sheep.

Sometimes, it's Try-hard to look serious but fails miserably, like Mahou Shoujo Site and Mahou Shojo of the End

Sometimes, it can be done right like Wonder Egg Priority did

Depends, but I generally enjoy them quite a lot, unless they go overboard with it and kill my favorite characters.

COTE is so cringe that i am physically unable to watch it. Every time i give it another chance i watch 2 episodes or so and am so epmbarassed by the reeking 14 years old edgelord energy that i close my tab and forget about it for 6 months. Ayanokoji pfp = clown/14 yo.

It's been here for forever, it'd be strange for it to disappear. In my opinion it's a generic characteristic of a character, at times it adds something and at times it takes away something. But unlike the Isekai trend/faze/fad or whatever, I'm not bored of the dark/edgy trend, as long as it's not in a Chunibyo/ 8th grader syndrome type setting.

@Ronichko You are the first or second person in my memory who has realized that this syndrome embodies the cliché of a typical LN fantasy.

Most of the time (if we're on about modern animanga stuff) it's really not done well, and moreso comes off as what some tween on twitter came up with as opposed to an original production with multiple people slaving away for its creation.

Don't get me wrong, angst is one of my favourite AniDB tags, but even I can see that edginess and cringe are being mixed up here (this is predominantly due to a major drop in quality of anime overall, both in terms of art and writing). Edgy/emo/grimy anime before the 2010s I do generally like, although I admit I have yet to see some of the "classics" . I guess my favourite thing of this kind would be Innocence (or Blame, in terms of manga). I think more of actually good edgy elements in shows would be beneficial, but edgy in the sense of creating a dark and gritty atmosphere, not whatever the hell is... currently happening. Dick spells and muh suicidal protag aren't edgy, I'm sorry.

I can't say I've noticed the trend myself (I don't keep up with new anime), but assuming it IS happening my guess would be that it's an easy and more or less foolproof way to exploit teenage-brained adults that have an obsession with Jeff Da Grilla and sanrio. That demographic also tends to have the most neurotically obsessive behaviour towards something along with having enough funds to spare (due to budgeting skill issues).

Make anime emo again.
My Vow is pure.

@RobertBobert Is that a good thing or bad thing, in your opinion.

@Ronichko Depends on the work I guess. For example, you can take Mahouka and imagine the MC's description as someone's chunni fantasy.

@RobertBobert Mahouka's a bad work though, can you give an example for a good one, no rush take your time.

@Ronichko I wouldn't say Mahouka is a "bad show", but if that's what you're asking for for a GOOD EXAMPLE, then premise almost any super power LN sounds like your typical chuuni plot.

To really get a handle on a topic like this we need to define what edgy means. To me edgy is something that would either challenge the limits of violence/ecchi or it tackles some controversal social issue or inverts some common perception or make the good protag do some morally questionable but understandable things. Honestly I do not see any of these things happening in a high enough frequency to consider a trend. There is some edgy stuff out there sure but then again there are loads of anime that follow the usual formula I mean anime in general is riddled with tropes.

..you really think Mappa shows are edgy..?

No seriously, where is the edge? What is an edge?

Why can't people just call it dark when it's not even that pointy?

People on mal: a little blood = edgy

@Yumerei I don't think that understatement can be a reasonable argument to refute exaggeration. You're basically just saying "this opinion is opposite to mine, so it's wrong."

I personally enjoy it, but it can get a bit cringe if the show takes itself too seriously.

@RobertBobert did i say anything about an opposite opinion to mine being wrong..?

But seriously, what is an edge? Where is the edge? How pointy should it be to become an edge?

@Yumerei Well, you simply expressed a completely opposite opinion, implying that this refutes the opinions of others. You don't know the meaning of edgy but are debating whether it applies here? Here's the meaning: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/edgy

@RobertBobert yeah, so.. where is the edge exactly? You do know what I'm asking, right? Since you took your time replying to my post

@Yumerei I literally provided you with a link to several slang definitions of the term. You didn't even open it, right?

@RobertBobert no i did. But it didn't answer my question. Where is the edge? What is an edge? How pointy does it have to be to become an edge? Is it dark? is it bloody? Is it psychological? Is it horror? Is it your imagination?

@Yumerei If you continue to simply bait me into a pointless argument in advance, then I will simply stop answering. To make it more obvious, you just lack the requirement official (tm) edgyness scale from me.

@RobertBobert have fun replying to my post without giving me an answer lol. I was serious about the questions. You could just say you don't understand them, I won't bite.

People mention edgy without explaining what edgy means in anime terms. Good lord.
