Elements are associated with the state of mind and fighting techniques since forever. The reasoning was to take a deep breath and be as calm as water, not using water-based techniques. I can't believe you're serious about this, you must be joking. Also, sympathizing with a dying enemy is a common trope and it makes absolute sense for her character.
