| Before going to Japan, I would have scoffed at this. However, I also have a bit of a fondness for Japanese vending machines. Out in the night, where you're walking all alone, it can be a little scary... but the light of the vending machines from afar would keep me going and act as something like a lighthouse. And then it was always kinda fun trying to figure out what was going to be in each of them. And gosh, they were everywhere. I wasn't used to that. There's this feeling of familiarity when you see one. So before going to Japan I would have thought this was just straight up stupid, random trash, but actually I kinda get it. And I don't expect them to take it seriously, but I see where the idea or feeling of wanting to even make this might have stemmed from. At some point, I would just look at what each vending machine had to offer and sometimes it would just be a pleasant surprise. It's hard to explain unless you experience the vending machines yourself-- and I'm not trying to hype them up since they aren't like super special or anything, but it's kinda more like... I dunno, in my areas of the US it's like you don't seek out a vending machine, but in Japan it's like... they're so conveniently everywhere that you might even take them for granted. So I guess in a way it feels like a subtle, comedic thank you to the Japanese vending machine. They're like those healing save spots in some RPGs. It's just a save spot, but it's a relief-- wait, what are you doing? OH GOSH NO stop taking notes for a 'reincarnated as a saving point' anime! This anime is already the line you can't cross! Look how much I just had to try to justify this anime in my head so just please stop! No more! |
