From what I've found: Obviously, that release still hasn't happened as of December 2022, and I doubt that it ever will. But I also don't think Funi would've made the original "this release will happen in 3 months" proclamation if the production were completely falling apart. When companies make those "solicitations" of upcoming home video releases to retailers, the process on their end (translation, subtitling, dubbing, authoring, QC, packaging design, etc.) is essentially complete. Given all that has to go into getting masters into disc replicator facilities, and getting product shipped to retailers, there's no way Funi makes that announcement if (for whatever reason) they need a dub and have no VAs. Even if their dubbing plans had fallen apart, they could've still released it sub-only (if a dub weren't required -- an unconfirmed condition), or farmed the dub out to some studio like Arvintel, who've worked on numerous actual hentai along with several borderline/hardcore ecchi shows like Green Green, Eiken, Ah My Buddha, and Kanokon. And when I've seen dub VAs (at conventions and such) asked about working on raunchy anime, their response has usually been along the lines of "work is work, we need the money, we don't turn anything down." They also have options like using aliases if they want to protect their reputations. If the established VAs in Funi's stable were unwilling, there's a good chance that lesser-known, "hungrier" VAs might've stepped up. So in total, this "Funi canceled hxh 'cause they couldn't find actresses" storyline doesn't add up to me. I suspect it's more of an Interspecies Reviewers / Ro-Kyu-Bu! type of situation, where the plug got pulled somewhere higher up, whether on Funi's side or among the Japanese licensors. It's not surprising that the higher-end, most popular entries in the genre would be lucrative enough to dub, especially K-On and Lucky Star with their associations with Haruhi/Kyo-Ani. Azumanga Daioh was pretty popular in its day and considered an "undubbable" title, yet ADV managed to dub it and (imo) do a pretty good job -- though they did have to change classroom English to Spanish a couple of times. although there are exceptions, such as K-ON, Love Live, Lucky Star. more recently, D4DJ (one of the rare cases where the original VAs also did the English voices). Also, just because a series does not have an English dub, that does not mean that a dub in a different language does not exist. I'd class Strawberry Marshmallow as a show that likely wouldn't have gotten dubbed if it came out after the market crashed. It had a few English-speaking segments along the lines of KinMoza, where the generally-decent dub took the laziest possible approach of just adding "[Speaking English]" in the Songs/Signs subtitle track that plays with the English audio. |
