Bro. I'm in college right now and I'm STILL being forced to take humanities courses like psychology and philosophy. What the fuck? This isn't fair. I'm a computer science major. None of that shit will help me become a web developer.

I don't think being "intelligent" has to do with knowing your country's history. What if I move into the United States? Why do I need useless knowledge, that I've already forgotten 2 years ago, about Whats-His-Face?

It's disgusting how I had to be forced to take these courses. My marks in those courses lowered my average and I suffered through all of those projects and essays that I didn't give a shit about.

Mayuka, just because you got bad grades on a subject or think it's boring, doesn't mean it's unimportant or unessential. I struggled a lot with maths, I hated chemistry and handicrafts. Why should I know how to sew right? We have kids in India doing that for us. Even so I do never count how many X bananas I'm about to buy, or what Z haircut a pan cake may have, it was good that I did learn some basics.

All subjects are important because a lot of shit is unsettled when you're a kid. You're not even necessarily sure about what you will do for the rest of your life when you're 40.
I would feel very unsure about a Prime Minister who knew less about the History of Canada than I do.

Then I agree, you are a college student and then you should not have to study subjects that are not in your field. But we can't trust a 14 or 16 year old in middle or high school to know that she will become a web developer. I probably wanted to become a soccer player when I was at that age.

In general, learning is good for the character.

HOME ECONOMICS
or cooking class, whatever. I think it should be mandatory as a subject for at least 6 months. Learning to cook is important. It's a shame they stopped doing home ec at my school years ago and they don't plan on bringing it back.

You will always interact with people and face all kinds of life situations. That's what philosophy and psychology are for. They're examining our behavior and various things that pop into life. There would be no science without philosophy.

It could be they're just teaching you awfully though. These subjects are very interesting and ever since I experimented with them a little things got better.

politics

Most people don't give a shit about this, but reality is, politicians take advantage of this matter.

We would probably have a higher chance of electing desirable people in the position of power if the masses were more well informed with this topic.

I feel that Psycology/Pop Culture can only be learned over time through first-hand experiences with people, the courses offered at schools for those subjects are pretty dull. Although it's useful for theory and terminology.

Also, why the fuck did they remove driver's ed off the high school curriculum? Shit's useful.

The most essential subjects (and also a minimum requirement in most jobs) in my country would be Math, English and our mother language.

However I must agree that most subjects are there for a reason and all serve a purpose. Besides, if you've never had a science class before, how are you going to determine if you actually like science or not and whether you're good at it or not, before actually choosing your line of work based on science subjects? So I do agree on a mix of subjects to be available for students up until they chose their line of work, then focus on subjects that are specific to their choice.

What I have mixed feelings on is religion. My country is a Christian country, however there is a major part of the population that is not in fact Christian. The average class usually has a mix of different faiths, so I don't get the point of doing a religion class, when at least 1/4 of the class has to be excused due to different faiths. Please note, Christian children receive religious background anyway by volunteers associated with the church, it actually is obligatory if one wants to undergo Holy Communion or Confirmation. So in this case, I really do think its useless to teach it at school.

Just Maths.

I would say Spelling and Grammar and stuff, but they don't even teach that anymore, because analysing Shakespeare is soooooooo much more useful.

The funny part is, you spelled analyzing wrong. lol

"analysed" is the UK way of spelling it.

Math, english, and science classes. History is stupid, I don't need to learn about all the wars fought so long ago, with the exception of the World Wars, and remembering shit is hard, the last two AP exams I've taken for history, I failed.

in other words; 'history is stupid because I suck at it', solid.

So, history is stupid just because you don't have the intelligence to remember it or pass two exams about it?

By that logic, math is stupid, just because I got a 19 out of 100 on my first college math test.

Pretty much every subject contributes to the world, and history is 100% one that contributes, and is extremely important. Math 100% contributes as does the sciences, both of which help us advance, and essentially, give us reasons to advance, as well as the possibility to advance at all. They always have. All 3 technically. The arts are seemingly less important, but only if you consider it from a very narrow point of view, i.e, your life. I mean, I never liked any music class I took and learned practically nothing from it. But if humans didn't study shit such as arts(Film, Dance, Art(painting, drawing type art) etc) then we wouldn't be as half as intelligent and diverse a species as we are today. Every subject is important in it's own right, and especially important for humans, just as they have been in the past. Just because we don't care that Poland was invaded in 1939, marking the start of ww2, doesn't mean that history isn't important, nor does it even mean that event wasn't important.

Don't be ignorant. Learn as much as you can, use it to stick your penis in girl's vaginas, and then die.

If you're taking computer science major in college to become a web developer, then you're wasting your time already as it is. If you can't conceive how any humanities class can be useful to you as a computer science major, then you probably lack the imagination to develop your career anyways. Might as well just pick up an online crash course on Javascript and become a code monkey.

A lot of websites' design is retarded.

Maybe the designers should learn the humanities at all, so they'd know what makes for a comfortable website and what designs just look bad.
