I get what the drug did... but I didn't see the point, especially when they didn't bring it back again and make it important somehow. If they took that drug out of the anime completely, I don't think it would have affected the story in the slightest.

Same with Lain's sister. If you took her out of the story completely I don't think it would affected the story whatsoever. I understand that the Knights attacked the sister, but I don't understand why. How was that supposed to get Lain inot the Wired? Lain barely even noticed her, let alone showed any sign she had any feelings toward her sister one way or the other. And they kept going back to the sister, and showing how messed up she was like it continued to be largely significant, but I didn't see the point of it all.

I could go on all day about a lot of things, and only get vague half-answers to my questions about them. This is what I meant about the missing pieces of the puzzle and extra pieces. Stuff that isn't explained very well if at all, and stuff that appears to be completely unnecessary and serve no real purpose that I can see.

Granted, I have only seen it once, and I'm certainly not super-smart, so between the two I'm guessing those reasons are why Lain is so confusing to me. Maybe if I watched it again then I would understand some parts a little better, but this anime left me with zero desire to watch it a second time.

The whole anime is about that... That was just one way of many they were using to break the wall.[/quote]

I'm saying the drug itself never added anything. It could have been an interesting addition to the story but instead it was put on the back burner to things that should have been way smaller like Alisa's thing with the teacher

The drug was one of the ways to break reaity and it was show in Cyberia to do the scene with Lain saying "we are all connected" that was used as the first appearance of one of Lains personalities, the Wired Lain.

Arisu thing with the teacher show us the chaotic side of one of Lains personality, the "Evil" Lain ( She did many things before, but thats beside the point). This plot is used to show some of the "powers" the wired have as it is used to erase peoples memories of that accident.

I saw the drug as an "Extra". What was important was the man's reaction when he saw Lain after he took the drug. I thought to myself during that scene, "Why Lain? What makes her special compared to everyone else in that club? Why did the man react to Lain? Why wasn't Lain moving?" These are the scenes that catch my attention and get me curious.

I'm not sure why you'd consider Alisa's thing with the teacher as small - it set up the whole thing with Lain rewriting memories which was a major part of the show.

To add to this, remember that Lain is an Omnipresent being in the Wired. And since the Wired is connected to everyone, she can see Everything. The scene with Alisa was a way to demonstrate Lain's ability to do this.

I agree with this in the sense that the scene was important, but the drug was extra. And I can kind of see what was said about the drug being used as one of the methods to tear down the walls between the Wired and reality. I can accept that.

There are other things too that I thought of that I didn't understand, but I'm sure had meaning symbolically. I just wasn't able to grasp what that meaning was.

Like I said before, I appreciate what this anime was about and all that it tried to accomplish. And it's great that there are people that understand it better than me, and enjoyed it much more. It was simply beyond me lol, and I'll leave it at that. lol :)

I spent a bit of time now reading some thought of everyone who posted here.
I have to say that one reason i love Lain so much is the fact that they leave things unexplained in a story where it actually makes sense. Many anime copied that afterwards and it never made sense. Lain is the only anime ever where it makes sense to not offer a solution to anything because Lain is not meant to be fully understandable.

I love how mind challenging it is and i remember when i watched it, that i was so curious about every single scene that i paused, rewatched or even read the explanation if i didn´t get it. I never had that with any other anime and i missed it. It is an amazing watch.

As for animation: guys, this is 1998. Lain is maybe 2nd to Ghibli and noone else when it comes to animation during that time. It supports the general feeling of Lain perfectly in my opinion.

Also, i love the sound of it. Duvet is probably the anime related song i listened to more often than to any other song.

So i´m a huge fan of this anime. I think it´s absolutely unique and would lose a lot of it´s power if it were simpler or if it would offer an explanation to everything. The truth is, maybe there was an explanation to everything and we just haven´t found it? ;-)

The first couple of episodes were intriguing but then it went downhill for me. As someone (I think it was StarSushi?) has mentioned - I was just waiting for episode that would explain what is going on and it just didn't come. That resulted in me not paying too much attention to what's going on onscreen which, mixed with the fact that I was never the best at picking up these small signs and facts made it a miserable watch for me. Opening song was super pleasant for me and I liked the art - for me it was the very first glimpse into the older anime and I was pleasantly suprised.

I agree.
I actually like that there are some things that are unexplained or not (very) relevant to the rest of the story, because while watching, it makes you wonder which information is important in understanding what's going on and what is just an extra.
Still, I do need to rewatch it, because I'm still really confused about a lot of things. (And thanks for the explanations, Fellener, some things are clearer to me now. :) )
One thing I liked about the art was the way they textured(?) the shadows (with the red dots etc.). I don't know why that stood out to me, but I think it was a nice idea.

I pretty much mirror everything said here

It started off very interesting and had me wanting to know more, but it started to drag on a little too long as it expanded things, and didn't really "wow" me with the conclusion. Eventually started to feel like a chore just to watch it, which is why it took me so long. In the end it was still a cool story, but I simply didn't have much fun watching it like I do most psychological series. The animation and sound were great though. The atmosphere of the show was easily the strongest thing about it.

Definitely can't say it was bad by any means, but I would have liked it a lot more if it had presented the story a bit differently. I will likely watch it again sometime to see all the little hints and clues I missed in the beginning episodes, but beyond that I'm content with seeing it just the one time.
