Day Six (Day Four cont.)
The parade had come to an abrupt climax. Lupadim and Brynhildr were rushed off in an ambulance driven by Bash and Cruzateu, Brynhildr ordering for the apprehension of Kira moments before being hauled away. The Kira family was quickly spotted in the audience, fleeing after their botched assassination attempt. Flume and Kira made a split from Joaoaa, who gets lost among the crowd. Seeing an orange sun tanned man darting towards Kira, Flume intervenes and is planted on his back as Kira just manages to make it out of the vehement mob himself. Realizing he had caught the wrong target, the tan man pulled himself up from Flume and slicked back his gelled up spiky orange hair before manoeuvring his way to the edge of the crowd in search of Kira, dropping a white 3.5 x 2 inch business card in Flume’s lap in the process.
The man was Karote, a recently instated security staff member at the courthouse. He wore a smudged off-white wife beater under a leather jacket and a pair of torn jeans that gave off the impression he might have been a greaser at some point in his adult life. After being constantly reprimanded for slacking off in the workplace, Karote was removed from his mundane desk job and placed in an even less eventful position out in the field. Not willing to let the opportunity to get some action in slip by, Karote did his best to organize the mob and initiate a march on the Kira family mansion. By the grace of god Karote did not recognize Flume, having never been in a position where he’d have to directly interact with the residents of Xiniltown before. Flume knew that the crowd was out for blood and so he discreetly plucked all of the extravagant bells and whistles from his attire before ruffling his curly auburn hair, helping him to blend in better with the smallfolk.
Coming from the head of the pack that had now reached the top of Cruz drive, Flume saw a bright orange glow and began to smell smoke wafting towards his direction. He quickly dashed through the pack to where Karote was standing, torch in hand. As Karote motioned to throw his torch into the now desolate mansion, Flume held back his arm and pushed him aside, however, a plethora of other men in the mob began hurling lighters and torches into the glass windows of the mansion, setting it ablaze within moments. Flume broke away from the pack hopped into a side window of the mansion, calling out for Kira in case he had been there. No response. Flume ascended the high-end marble foyer steps to his bedroom in the attic. Once inside his bedroom, Flume climbed out onto the fire escape and propelled himself onto the roof. He removed a set of shingles from the roof and uncovered a brass skeleton key. Dropping back down onto the fire escape, Flume could see that the flames had engulfed all of the first floor of the mansion and he could hear the horses wailing in the stables; he would have to move quickly. Back inside the house Flume pulled down his bookcase, knocking down literary works by names ranging from Kafka to Thoreau in the process. With his fingernails, Flume propped up a wooden panel that was originally beneath the bookcase, revealing a small safe. Unlocking the safe with his brass key and unlatching it’s hinges, Flume removed its contents, a single sheet of torn out notebook paper holding a single name on it “Werecatleopard”. Drawing a pen from his coat pocket, Flume scribbled down Karote’s name and made his way back out through the fire escape and into the stables where he freed the horses. Mounting his trusty steed, Flume trotted into the woods behind the mansion and never turned back.
Karote is dead.
