I prefer characters to have emotions rather than being lifeless robots. Just my comment on this scenario.

Depends. I think if they have a reason that they're stoic, that's fine. If they have a reason to be emotional, that's fine too.

But generic protagonists that cry even if there's even a drop of milk spilled, that grinds my gears.

Tatsuya from Mahouka and Inaho from Aldnoah Zero are pretty cool emotionless characters just because they get things done, In some shows you need a character like that just to show that somebody is willing and able to do something in different circumstances rather than getting bogged down by emotion.
