The Ghibli films are some of the most well known and excepted examples of anime in the US.(I'm not sure about other countries) An all around great thing to show someone who isn't keen on anime. I remember watching them with my family and not even knowing that it was anime.

Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro are my top 2 favorites. Simply put
"I told you. My name's not Kaka anyone."
"I am the hope of the universe. I am the answer to all living things that cry out for peace. I am protector of the innocent. I am the light in the darkness. I am truth. Ally to good, nightmare to you!"

Wow...I'll never forget. When I was about 14-15, my parents would go traveling and I would go stay over at my grandmas house. I would sleep on the big sofa in the living room but I was always too hyper to sleep so I would turn the TV on at like 3am and start flipping the channels. I don't remember how I got to cartoon network but I did and they were showing the episode of Cowboy Bebop when Spike is all bandaged up and then the next night I saw Inuyasha and THATS when I knew whatever this kind of cartoon was...I liked it! lol So then every time after that I would flip it to cartoon network to watch Inuyasha at my grandmas house if I happened to stay over.

Although it wasn't until I was about 17 that I actually remembered about Inuyasha and then started watching the series on my own at home. Good times :)

I watched Pokémon and DBZ when I was little but I never really made the connection that it was anime. I didn't really like anime for awhile and thought it was weird, but then my friend showed me Welcome to the NHK. And here I am today.

What do you mean? Anime is weird. That's one of the reasons I love it.

Welcome to the NHK certainly is weird. I would have thought that it wouldn't appeal to wogs - that a good grounding in Japanese culture would be needed. But if it worked for you Morty, then it works and I'm happy you ended up here.

Hmm..
For me it was when I was on facebook talking to some friends and blah blah
Then I was scrolling down my newsfeed and I saw some meme about death note (Yay for memes) I found it interesting but didn't bother to look it up after that day I kept on hearing stuff about different anime and Death note
And then this one faithful day I overheard some people in school talking about "Anime", At that time I didn't know what anime was but I was interested for once in it.
When I searched up Anime I saw the Death note meme and some other anime
So I decided to watch Death note
I kept on watching more Death note and before I knew it I fell in love with it
I wanted more of this thing called anime and so I kept on watching more and more anime and I found out about Manga too when I wanted to know about what happened next in Naruto.
So that's the story of how I got into anime :P

Thank you for posting this question.

In 1977, two different titles caught my attention on television.

Star Blazers (スペースオペラヤマト Space Opera Yamato)

and...

Battle of the planets aka "G-Force" (科学忍者隊ガッチャマン, Kagaku Ninjatai Gatchaman) which Haim Saban later ruined [**BUTCHERED**] in the mid-90's calling it "Haim Saban's Eagle Riders"

I was immediately hooked. Anime has been a life-long companion for me.

Yes, I love these stories. I'm glad you made it, T1AF. You're safe with us now. =0)

Wow, Marshallh. I wish I had such perspective. You go back to when you really had to work at it to be a fan.

When I was younger, I used to watch anime on Toonami like-
Dragon Ball Z
Yu Yu Hakusho
Outlaw Star
Big O etc

I also used to watch Pokemon. Then I moved to Japan and a few of my friends(American) showed me the first few episodes of Naruto. I thought it was funny. Fast forward a few years, I moved back to America and moved in with my friends. One of my friends was watching Yu Yu Hakusho and he told me it used to play on Toonami and that I should watch it. After a while I started watching it. Then I started watching Naruto, Rurouni Kenshin, Bleach, Death Note etc.

When I was young I would always watch Dragon Ball Z and I thought that was a cartoon and my mom went to a thrift store and bought The Slayers Next box set on VHS that had the last 10 episodes on it. I noticed that the art was similar to Dragon Ball Z and thought that this was amazing and wanted to watch more things like this and that is how I got into watching anime.

My friend gave me his hard drive for a certain game. On it was Avatar the last Airbender, and One Piece. After watching both non-stop i realized something... I wanted more, not knowing that they were called "anime" i googled for an hour, found an anime stream site that i still use today, and it began.

I've always liked animation and I've been aware of anime for at least 10 or 15 years, mostly from the teen shows like Dragon Ball , One-Piece etc, but I didn't follow them closely. It wasn't till I saw Spirited Away and Elfen Lied that I got totally hooked. At first I just watched shows from commercial DVD's I got at Best Buy, Resale stores and Amazon, but then I discovered the streaming sites and finally signed up for Crunchyroll and Funimation. In the last year or so I learned how to use torrents and StupidBT. Much of this happened after I retired. After close to 700 anime's watched I am finally slowly tapering off.

I'm fond of cartoons ever since a child and since most of the animated series shown in our country are Japanese cartoons, I can say I grew up with anime (as my father also loves watching DBZ and Voltes V). It was slow and in mid-90's (I was around 7 years old then, I think) that I started keeping tracks on when Sailormoon and YuYu Hakusho will be shown on TV. Then came to Philippine TV Mojacko, Magic Knight Rayearth, Fushigi Yuugi, TriGun, InuYasha, Lupin the Third, Crayon Shin-chan, Doraemon, Cardcaptor Sakura, so on and so forth. Bit by bit, I become addicted to them and the last thing I know, I have a hard disk full of Anime.
