^Simple question.
My answer: Coming from a different class to what I am at this very moment, I would say that social class doesn't mean much to me, however the fact that it pretty much controls your life is sad. Social mobility is nice yet hard to achieve and even if all the effort are put into it not always possible, if anything social class divisions should be destroyed since someone with a £5/h wage is the same as someone with a £15/h wage.

Social class? What's that?

>America
>The 1%
>Everyone is "middle class"
>1% Fucking 99% over
>Occupy Wall Street (even though it's not particularly their fault)
Uh. I forgot where this green-texting was going.

Serious answer: It doesn't mean anything to me. Because as far as I know, I don't recognize it.
I'm in uni at the moment (in lecture, no less), so literally everyone is in a homogenous social class. You could be dirt poor, or filthy stinking rich—I wouldn't notice unless you explicitly told me.

And at the moment, I'm not particularly aware of the "1%", since Riverside is pretty... shitty.

Okay fine, I notice hobos around here, but their presence doesn't make me worry about my social class.

In fact, I'm not quite sure what the hell "social class" is anymore. Care to define it for us?

Being in the middle class, I am obligated to blame all of my problems on the upper class. Because people having money that I don't have makes me mad.

British idea of the Working, middle and upper class. Now they are coming up with even more classes.
I am not British by the way.

I don't really notice social class too much. Where I'm from its like 5% rich people, 5% poor people and the other 90% is middle class and like Mellow said, you don't actually notice the diference unless people explicitly tell you. I have one rich friend, but he's also really smart so where he gets in life will most likely be atained through his intelligence and effort just like me and most other people.

Money doesn't equate to social class but since all know what social class is I assumed you did as well.

You say you don't recognize it, but it's impossible to escape at least that's the way I see it. The ownership of capital often decides where you will go to school. the career you will embark upon, the way you speak, the way you think..the list goes on.

So while you may not recognize the class system, you are a product of it and it is reflected in your subconscious actions that prop up and maintain class stereotypes.

In an ideal world class divisions would be done away with, since hierarchy itself is built on a model of exploitation, the only way to properly achieve this is through forms of anarchy. Capitalism fails as it is built on Hierarchy and so does Communism in it's recognition of the state which simply occupies the top spot and continues to oppress even though it was built on the pretense of liberation.

I actually haven't really given it all that much thought in my entire life. So I'm not even sure how to respond to this topic. Personally I was born in what would be called the "lower class" and I still am there. Was born in pretty shit conditions and had to go to shit schools and pretty much get nothing in life. Currently studying Physics so it's not been too bad but if I didn't get help from the government and the university there would be no way for me to pay. When I picture people getting everything set out for them in life and they get everything they want and don't have to worry whether their home will have enough money to keep on surviving it pisses me off. People get born into "high class" and get everything handed to them on silver platters if they so wish, they go to private schools and compared to the average person they have everything better in terms of these "needs" . If you were to ask me right now if I would have preferred to be born into a "high class" family I'd flat out refuse it, I like myself the way I am and everything I've gone through has changed me for worse or the better I can't say but I prefer it this way. If I was born into a different family , social status or whatever, I imagine I would be a different person than I am now and would probably hate what I'd become if I led such a sheltered life.

Not sure where I was going with this because I had no idea how to respond.

Really nice post, I myself was born into middle class but I am within the working class at the moment and I do agree with a lot of what you are saying. I struggle to afford Uni etc.

Social class, more academically known as socioeconomic status (SES), is typically based on one's income, prestige, and education in society relative to others. (Herpderp it could also be referring to a class-based society but nobody want to talk about theory here anyways.)

SES is correlated with a lot of things. Like birth weight, risk of mortality, engaging in self-destructive behaviour, life opportunities, and so on and so forth.

It is what society labels an individual as, and can largely shape the individual's behaviour, attitude, values, goals, interests, etc.

Social equality is found to be better correlated with longer life expectancies, less crime rates, better quality of health care, and so on. The ideal is a large middle class with a minority of the rich and the poor. At the moment though, US has a lot of poor and the middle class is steadily in decline.

What does social class mean to me? It influences the very fabric of my existence.

Class consciousness is on an all-time low in the west. The bourgeoisie still hold all the power, but the working class are complacent and content with their current situation to do anything about it.

"middle class" had already been mentioned by the time i posted. being middle class indicates a certain level of financial security. The term is part and partial of your ability to bring home the bread."

I am slightly offended that you imply that somehow an entire anime board (or beyond??) knows more about the differention between class and wealth than myself.

I've lived both "classes". Grew up poor, married rich. Frankly I could give a shit either way. Having nice vacation homes, a lot of square footage, and trips are great, but that doesn't make life happy.

I don't really get how to answer this question..

How much does (money)social class mean to me.. I came in here hoping it was psychological..oh well..

It might mean nothing to me or something. I wish both poor and rich classes would move into the middle class.. that way I don't have to keep seeing all these sad stories of people dying for the dumbest reasons
