There seems to be just as much evidence for it being a sequel as there is for it not being one. I think it's really just open to interpretation. Of course...the third movie could change everything.

I was hoping they were going to name #3 "You can (not) Retreat".

I just hope they call the last one "You Can (not) Survive".

I like the title "You Can (Not) Change" for the last one.

Personally, I believe that this theory is at least partially correct in that there is simply no other way of explaining why the sea was blue in the original series and is red in the Rebuild movies

If it's a remake then it's easy to explain. The Second Impact in the Rebuild was different than the Second Impact in the series, and it had a much more pronounced effect on the environment.

If it's a sequel then that explains the ocean, but it creates a lot more contradictions.

Evangelion 4.0: This is (not) the End (I like it as a title for the last movie if it is a direct continuation from the series).

It was actually explain in 2.0 that the red ocean is an effect of the second impact. As Narmy said, it just shows it had a much more pronounced effect on the environment, really. Nothing solid to prove the sequel theory.

Oh, You Can (Not) Redo, interesting title (everytime I checked before this hadn't appeared yet, guess it's been a while).
Interesting propositions for 4.0/FINAL (lawl'd @ Run away & pass), how 'bout You Can (Not) Survive (also works with Escape like newnar said)? Director always loves doing out of scale endings (well, especially EoE) so it sounds good for a final title.

I don't agree with the rebuild of eva being a sequel, the cycle thory sure sounds interesting, but it's just not tangible enough or that believable, I would just see it as how anno put it, just a rebuild. Surely theres alot of eva theories out there but I don't wanna over-anaylze things

Not to mention the spear already being in space, those curious little things Kaworu said about Shinji at the end of both movies, why Mari seems to know Shinji without ever meeting him before (the Asuka theory).

They are real subtle changes that you catch if you've seen the original series that just make you think.

Agreed with WolfWood37 for the sequel point (disagree with mari/asuka theory, don't know what people have said about it but for the small amount that you've brought up there's nothing to work with). My first time watching both 1.0 and 2.0 kind of gave that cycle impression, and I've recently re-watched both and only Kaworu heavily hints it.
The spear is also a good observation (noticed it but it didn't register as abnormal until I saw your post). In EoE there are multiple spears that resemble Longinus' though so it could simply be not-unique? You still see the spear (the one Rei drew out and threw into space in NGE iirc) stabbing Lilith in 1.0 and 2.0.

Anyway:
End of first movie: "Not the Third again. You never change, do you?"
After ED of 2nd movie (the strongest hint): "This time, I'll definitely... make you happy."

It has cycle vibes. Whether it works as a cycle in the sequel sense sounds weird though. I simply believe it to be an alternative outcome of the NGE series (same for how EoE is an alternate ending to NGE). I've always just tended to ignore Kaworu because of his gay vibes, which is why I rather wait for 3.0+FINAL (simultaneous release iirc?).

And Mari knowing about Shinji could simply be due to infiltrating NERV's database or being told of him by her superiors in the USA. It's most likely the same as how Asuka knew about Shinji beforehand because he was Ikari's son. Take this for example: if you saw Obama on the street you'd recognize him without having personally met him before, and he doesn't know you. Same thing, different setting/characters.

Red/Blue ocean theory: It's more impressive/shocking to see a red ocean. To impress the viewer even more, you use a red ocean. It doesn't necessarily mean something, and it makes more sense with the effects of the second impact than in NGE imo. Some changes like these can be as corrections to the originals, we can't be sure atm.

Seeing as how different to NGE the movies will now be (1.0 being quasi-similar; 2.0 really started to change with new character and 9th+10th angel situations being completely different), I wonder how everything will turn out. I don't expect it to end up predictable, stopped expecting that from this director when I first saw the originals 10 years or so ago. He'll do whatever the hell he wants.

And ofc: pirate eye-patch Asuka, rawr.
PS: Only checked page 3, sorry if I was redundant, but I only replied to posts on page 3 anyway so I think it's not really the case.

Sorry, just realized that this has been a recurring title for the movies, but the japanese is kind of weird. It reads like "Wevangeliwon". Does anyone know why they did that?

I understand it to be an alternate universe, not an alternate outcome. That means that the events of the main series and of End of Evangelion have happened or are happening simultaneously. It's just that as far as we know, those timelines can't interact.

Basically true. I smirked at your remark.
In case you don't know, they used to have those characters and sounds ("syllables") in Japanese in the past, but nowadays they don't and every word that used to have those is written with a simple "e" or "o". For example, you can still see the character for "ye" in the beer brand Yebisu, which is pronounced /ebisu/, but in other occasions, the godly name Ebisu is written with an "e", not "ye".
In case you did know, let's say I wrote this for the potential readers who did not.

So why would you use something so outdated as the katakana for we and wo?
To show off, probably. Somehow I feel like the title tries to put the movies on par with Japanese literature classics.
Or maybe he wants to make Japanese people even more confused with the pronunciation of Evangelion, as many Japanese say it like /ebangelion/. Now the majority of the Japanese audience feels awkward pronouncing we, va, or wo.
Which leads us to Shoujo_Q's reasoning.
