It's not in western television. It's not in too many movies. When did this anime nosebleed start and who started it? I want to know the origins of this thing.

It's just a more polite way of giving a male character an erection, since literally making a characters dick get hard his kinda obscene I guess, they just made the blood rush to another area, and it also comes from an Old Japanese wives tale. Kinda like we have "if you masturbate to much you will get hairy palms."
It doesn't think, it doesn't feel, it doesn't laugh or cry..... All it does from dusk till dawn is make the soldiers die.

creepy tale. I think its because Japanese males have problems with their nose cappilaries.

I think it's because when you're really aroused. you feel hot, and people tell them to cool off or else the heat is going to cause them to nosebleed.

that's the origin I believe...

Healthy young men that have no other sexual outlet will often suffer nosebleeds upon seeing the naked female body, or even just a pair of well-filled panties. It's probably a side effect of High Pressure Blood in a body that's Overdrawn At The Blood Bank.

The nosebleed is, of course, a visual shorthand/euphemism for sexual arousal. It is commonly interpreted that way for males and females, with little trickles of blood indicating mild arousal, and gushing fountains of blood indicating erection/extreme arousal in both sexes. It can also be interpreted as shorthand strictly for erections in males. In that case, when blood shoots from the nose explosively, and in ridiculous quantity, the implication would be an ejaculation. *
If viewed in that way, it may cause squick in some viewers if a female character gets an explosive nosebleed.
In certain circles, an erection has been referred to in recent years as a "Japanese nosebleed".

This happens in virtually every anime with Fanservice.

The concept comes from a Japanese old wives' tale, and might be Truth In Television in very rare circumstances.

In recent anime and manga, female characters are increasingly becoming subject to nosebleeds. This typically happens to characters with strong... appetites and Schoolgirl Lesbians in particular. Yaoi Fangirls are also likely to show this effect. The more benign, traditionally feminine version of this is Luminescent Blush. Female characters may also get nosebleeds upon seeing something they think is absolutely adorable, although males have lately become increasingly vulnerable to that as well.

But I was thinking about Nakahara Sunako from The Wallflower, who gets nosebleeds so frequently only with the sight of "shining people", I don't think she gets aroused with all that people o.o! (including females, but she's not a lesbian)

I dunno, but I wish they'd stop doing it. Nosebleeds are fucking gross.

Although I understand it's implication, I dislike nosebleeds. It's WAY overused even for the tiniest of sexual arousal. Well, since it's a Japanese thing I don't think I would ever truly understand why they wish to animate it over and over again. I often question their sense of humor in that department.

Oh well...

Nosebleeds - a painless and even pleasing form of blood donation...

With all the fan service modern anime have it is stupid to still have this sort of anime law. Just give the guys a boner and having their hands covering the crotch. That is far more hilarious to watch than a guy feinting or whatever. Plus it is more realistic.

And it is not even too bold. How is the oversexualization of the body just fine to show but not an erection, sensored by clothes and hands? It's just stupid.

Nosebleeds in Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu work though... It's rather hilarious to see Akihisa act retarded.

I was also curious about these nosebleeds mainly because I never understood why they happened. Looking back, even if I see someone I find attractive I've never had a nosebleed as a result. This definitely shed some light on things though.

I actually found this topic really interesting and informative. It all makes so much sense now! I can't wait to explain that to my friends the next time that happens when I'm watching anime with them. :D

Wow, this was pretty informative.
I always just thought it was a way to show the character was aroused.

I'm very thankful for all answers, but honestly none of them explain where it came from, just why it's in there. The only time I've seen nosebleeds was at cold places and it wasn't due to sexual excitement.
