Mod Edit: The App is currently not available.
For more information see this post.
----------------------------------------------------------

Hi everyone,

I've just released a MAL client for iPhone and iPod Touch on the App Store. It's named Pocket-MAL. This first version has basic functionality but I plan to expand them on regular basis. The next version will have nice UI improvements (it's almost done). Then i will focus on adding new functionality.

Feel free to contact me for every problem or for suggestions on how to improve the app.
Hope you enjoy

Thanks for downloading it.
I've already submitted an update (it's in the review queue) to improve the UI.
The next update will be focused on adding new functionality:

  • Ability to update an anime/manga (ex: change status) in your personal list
  • Search in your personal list

thanks yeah thats the only thing i noticed, that you can add anime but you can't choose if your watching/completed/plan to watch etc.

if it brought you to a page like the advanced info/add page that'd be awesome (when you click add anime)

and then if your anime on your list were separated into, completed/on-going/plan to watch/ on hold/dropped in alphabetical order

and then maybe have it had a show/hide drop down box on the anime page(where it has the descriptions) if it had it for a few of the reviews

thanks man for the amazing app

the above is just some observations, that'd be awesome.

it works great, can't wait for the update and ones to come :D

Just a quick status update. Pocket-MAL 1.1.0 is waiting for review (it will take some days). As I said this update is focused on UI improvements. Here's how the search screen and the search details screen look like now:

I really like where this is going, so i hope you'll keep developing this app!
Also, if you made an Android version i think that would make bunches of people happy as well ;-)

I see that the functionality is there, so if you work a bit on the UI (like it looks like you are doing) this will be awesome.

My thoughts:
The icon for the app looks.. not good. It doesnt fit on the homescreen at all.
The menubar-buttons in the bottom arent optimized for the iPhone4 resolution, so they kinda look like shit on an iPhone4. Probably same with the homescreen-icon.

The settings-dialogue isnt very pretty either, but you might have already fixed that as well in the new version.

Also, you should close the keyboard down when your credentials have been verified.

When adding things to your list, it doesnt seem like it checks if stuff is already in your list? I still get the "Add" button on series which are already Completed or Watching for me.

Hi viddy,

i'm glad you like the app. You're right, the main icon and the tab bar icons are non optimized for the iphone 4. I will scale the main icon to 114x114px (ip4 homescreen icon res) in the next release (not the update already submitted).

I've changed the settings view in 1.1.0. Now it looks nicer and better integrated with the ui look and feel (also fixed the keyboard problem).

I'm already working on a new release which will add the ability to change the personal status of an anime/manga (ex. setting the watching status, score, episodes read and so an). Next i will fix the add behaviour.

Hi,

just want to let you know that i've submitted Pocket-MAL 1.5.0. This version will add the ability to update your watch/read status, episodes/volumes/chapters watched/read, and your score.
As for the previous version it will take some days to complete the review process.

Hmm, looking good :). Although I don't like the actual design of the app, it does what it has to do and that's great!

This was a quick concept I did for a different app: http://forr.st/~mpQ
It's an app based on games, but you could use some same kind of graphical UI for the MAL-app.

Awesome, thanks! I've been wanting a MAL app. Just downloaded it and I agree with GJ, the GUI could use some work but apart from that i like it. :)

It'd be pretty cool if you could get the MAL logo as the app icon as well.

Hi everybody,

i've decided to change the UI in the next version of Pocket-MAL (the mockup posted by GJ seems a wonderful starting point). I also want this to be a "community driven" process, so i will post here every change i'll make to the UI and you will be able to make suggestions.
I'm starting with the search screen (i also want to include a filter option to search only anime/manga/both). Expect news in the next days.

Hi everybody,

as i promised i'm refactoring Pocket-MAL UI. Here's the first mockup for the search functionality:

I tried to make the navigation flow easier, so now the search results are displayed in one view (with a + to add the content to your personal list). The Options button allows to change the search options (search anime/manga/both).

Let me know what you think

Hi creAtZs,

thanks for downloading the app and for the suggestions:

- personal list should be seperated and should be arranged in alphabetical order
Version 2 will have an options button in the personal list so you can decide to show or hide anime/manga with a particular status. The content will be arranged alphabetically (also in the search)

- the plus in edit mode should have a function or shouldnt be shown
Version 2.0.0 will feature a new UI (see first post on this page), so the plus in edit is no longer shown (the navigation flow is simpler).

- the rating should be selectable like the status and not typeable
You mean a list from 0 to 10 (with increment of 1)? No problem

- the app should automaticly change the episode counter to max. if completed is chosen as status
Great advice :). I will implement it.

Again thanks everybody for the support and suggestions.

Would it be possible to post the .ipa files either here or on a file sharing site so those of us with jailbroken phones can install and test as it's made rather than having to wait for Apple to review and confirm the app?

Hi guys,

Pocket-MAL 2.0.0 is out. It features several improvements:

  • New UI with a simpler navigation flow
  • Alphabetically ordered search results and personal list
  • You can now search only for anime or manga
  • You can filter your personal list by content status
  • When you change the status to complete episodes, chapters and volumes are automatically setted in accordance

Hope you enjoy

Just got the update and it's looking better already. :)

- Would you able to separate the anime and manga lists and allow for switching between the two?

- Maybe you could also separate each list by "Watching", "On hold", "Completed" etc if you can.

Apart from that it's looking good. Keep it up! :)

Hi SupaKashy,

I'm glad you like the new app.
You would like to have different section for anime/manga and for content status instead of the filter options, right?

I implemented the filtering, but if the community likes the separate sections solution i will change the app.
So which solution you like? Let me know.

Hi creAtZs,

I've investigated the bug and i've found that the app crashes because the manga Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt has no volumes and chapters. I'll correct the bug in the next release. In the meanwhile if you need "panty & stocking" go to the options button and select only anime for the search.

Thanks

some improvements i would like to see however, would be some sort of caching for your personal anime list/manga list for those who don't have an iPhone or an internet connection all of the time and as others have said, separate sections for your list's

The app has a very small file size, so if it was possible to add a cache of the database and auto update when their is a connection it would be amazing. Probably the majority of people have ipods and wi fi usually is only found in the house.

I'm doing the last check for version 2.2.0 which will correct some bugs discovered (thanks to claTorino) and add support for landscape mode.
I'm also working on version 2.3.0 in which i'll insert offline browsing.

Hi Jrittmayer,

the details available from the API are: popularity rank, classification, members and favorited count, synopsis, genre. manga/anime adaptations, prequels and sequels.
If the community thinks that any of these details are usefull i'll include them (ex: as details in the search results).
Let me know what you think.

Hmmm, I think you should definitely include the genre and synopsis.

Prequels, sequels and adaptions might also be useful, but maybe not as much as the first two.

What do you menan by classification?

The other stuff doesn't seem important.

Thanks - Jrittmayer

I think it would be nice to have to option to change our default list view (reading, completed etc.), or to allow us to choose the view before it starts to load.

Sometimes it takes a while to load up my completed list and I have to wait for it before I can switch to currently reading/watching or wherever I want to get to.
