Like, setting, characters, plot, story, art, genre?

Stuff like that.

To me, setting is the most important. I prefer nighttime and modern settings. Maybe like World of Horror? But imagine it exclusively set at night. I'd prefer to avoid the medieval stuff.

Genre would be second. I prefer horror. But without jumpscares. I prefer atmosphere, immersiveness, coziness, mood, tone.

Maybe third is art. I don't want it too cartoony. I do prefer 2d.

The rest are important too but I can modify those in my head. I can modify story or characters in my head but I can't really change the settings and visuals and genre.

What's your taste?

I tend to be big into jrpg genre and also eroge so my priorities.
1. Characters/designs
2. Story
3. Gameplay
4. Music

My fav game series are Tales of and Trails so I really like world building in plots.

If the girls look like hags or some dei parade I will skip it.

I forgot about music!

Sometimes, I would play with the OST off to make the game creepy. XD

And I understand characters as number 1. I prefer female characters. They make the game so enjoyable.

I am definitely one of those gamers that prefers gameplay over everything else. If I can't enjoy the gameplay then everything else will fall on its face. Not to say that the gameplay has to be perfect, as one of my favorite titles of all time Illbleed does have somewhat clunky controls, however I am able to jive with it the more I play it. Second would probably have to be an interesting story and character plot if applicable. Which again going back to that game, it hasn't spades. After that it's not really a big deal, I don't really have a preferred genre and sound has never been that big of a deal so long as it doesn't like, you know, hurt my ears or make them bleed. 🤣

Depends on the type of game, in shooters the movement mechanics are most important to me.

Gameplay is the most important factor by far. Everything else should serve to enhance the gameplay experience.

Gameplay and something pleasing to look at is pretty much all that matters to me.

I don't like it when there are other things that are keeping me from playing the game. Like reading walls of texts, cutscenes or loading screens.

My favorite games are:

Etrian Odyssey?! I was fond of V, but I suck at it because of the golem boss.

Do you play other first person dungeon crawlers?

@mr_linear V is the only mainline one I haven't played, yet. There was no Japanese dub, so I didn't buy it. I've got an undub since, but 3DS emulation was a bit choppy last time I tried and I didn't like any of the 3DS entries that much anyway.

Yes, I've played quite a bit of first person dungeon crawlers. But I haven't found anything like the first three Etrian Odyssey games. Everything I found was too easy, which is also my main complaint against the 3DS titles. You have to get to like the last couple of super bosses to finally have some challenge. The fun part about Etrian Odyssey was that essentially every random encounter could be as stressful and deadly as a boss fight and you have an arsenal of cool skills to make it through.

But in most other games you just spam a button and make it through random encounters and not even bosses provide much more challenge.

Games I remember:

- Class of Heroes 1 & 2
- Unchained Blades
- Shin Megami Tensei

Games in my backlog:

- Ayakashi no Shiro
- Mushoku Tensei
- Dragon Knight I & II
- Shining and the Darkness
- Shining the Holy Ark

CoH 1 is nostalgic for me. I finished it a long time ago for PSP. I replayed it for a while for Switch. I kinda prefer it over EO. I'm just really bad at EO. XD

Did you enjoy CoH 1 and 2?

It's gameplay, easily; my favourite genres are danmaku and rhythm games.
After that it's probably aesthetics and the setting; I absolutely do prefer some games to others because the design of the playable character/s appeals to me more, and the general setting of games often interests me more than the specifics of the story I've noticed (this being mostly applicable to JRPGs) - Spira from Final Fantasy X / X-2 is one of my favourites and part of why X-2's so cool for letting you revisit it after everything in the first game, and getting to explore the world in Xenoblade Chronicles was really cool as well.
I suppose then that I would put characters and then story next after all of those. I feel like music is too important and ubiquitous to rank; it's crazy important to most games and can't really be separated from a lot of other aspects of the game. Sound design is similarly important but a lot more subtle, it's usually most apparent when it's lacking.

Fun comes first. Price comes second. Hours worth playing comes third.

After that comes ethics; like platform accessibility, hardware accessibility, user accessibility, being optimized and bad bug-free, preservation of itself and its deprecated versions, lack of DRM and anti-cheat software, ability to play offline and without an account or launcher secondary to that which it was purchased upon, etc.

I dropped each of them early on due to being too easy and not having particularly well designed labyrinths. Unchained Blades had a similar issue, but the story carried it and I basically treated it like a visual novel. But this was at a time when I already had abundant games to choose from.

I might return to it eventually, since there aren't that many Dungeon Crawlers and I like the genre.
