Too many games and too little time. Maybe you see a game with a massive discount and you get it but you never find the right time to actually sit down and play it

I feel like games also got a larger barrier to entry than for example anime and manga which is something you can just pick up for half an hour and then go on with your day. With a game you kinda have to set aside time and fully dedicate yourself to spending some hours on it

It's also more active entertainment so even if you got the time to passively binge watch a tv-series you might not be in the mood to start up and learn a new game

They probably plan to play them, but the plan fails.

Because Steam games are only meant to be bought and not played.

Steam's real factor is money laundering and not about good games.

Because they are like 5 bucks, and you will say "Yeah, after [x] I will diffidently play it! but something will happen, other games will release, and you will even forget that you even have the game in the first place.

Probably either because they are apart of a bundle or because they are on offer and its too good not to miss. And then it gets added to a backlog thats too big.

So many games and we don't have enough hours in the day to enjoy them all. I too have a lot of physical media still in its packaging from way back in the PS1 era that I still have yet to play, got a lot of Wii games still in their plastic wrap as well. Hopefully someday. We get easily distracted by other games. It's a snowball effect MAAAAAAN!!!!

@Retro8bit I have an unopened PS2 game, maybe more? I don't think they're worth much tho. But the unopened FF3 (SNES) was worth $3,000 in like 2012 on Amazon.. I thought it may have been the last one of its kind O_O I often wonder where it is now.

These are ~50k but it's like how often does something like this actually sell at that price lol

Short answer: lack of time.
I admit I'm guilty of hoarding games without playing them. I currently own 565 games on Steam, hundreds more on PSN, and a few on Switch. I probably have only played about 10% of them, let alone beat them.
It's a classic problem: back when I was a student, I have plenty of time but no money. Now that I have a job, I have plenty of money but no time.

It used to be much more common for cheap bundles to exist. I don't mean like whatever Humble Bundle does these days, I mean 10 to 20 "full games" for a $1. And it's such a good deal, right, so you'd buy them on principle alone.

@Shishio-kun

Crazy! I remember back in the day seeing some of these games in The bargain bin at GameStop for like $10 or less. Now they go for hundreds upon hundreds of dollars.

By the way what PS2 game do you have still sealed?

@Retro8bit

I know I have Tekken 5 sealed since I bought a HUGE Tekken 5 collectors thing that had the game with it separate, but I already had a copy. It looks like a sealed normal copy, it was just thrown in a box with a bunch of other really cool stuff. A unique Collectors Edition - everything but the actual game was special (but it was definitely worth it) :D

Other sealed copies may be games that came with consoles/bundles I know I never played, and possibly some cheap games I bought from like drugstores and intended to play (something like Summoner or The Bouncer)

Oh btw I tell this story a lot. But a sealed copy of Dragon Warrior (AMAZING COVER ART) was 100 bucks around covid. Then overnight, the prices jumped tremendously over $300. Maybe its less now? But apparently every sealed copy was either bought/flipped or repriced for some reason when they all decided to raise prices quickly and by a lot!

I thought this was strange, but then I found it happened to many other retro collectors!!! It may have been a whole lot of flippers rolled in and pulled a Blackrock on our precious sealed retro carts! ASSHOLES!!!!!!
