So I convinced my friends to watch this anime and after watching first ep they said that it is very cringy and overhyped

So I wanna ask that as compared to other romance anime what is issue with this? ( like yeah the first few chapters were boring but I found no other issue with the manga.)

I hope a genuine criticism about it (especially from those who are saying that it is overhyped.)

I found the anime average, but I liked it. I'm looking forward to the next episodes, and I'm not as hyped as everyone else. I think the hype surrounding this anime has raised people's expectations too high. I think that's the reason.

Character designs are top tier, the posters are really eyecatching, draws folk in. Then they make their judgement of the story which may be too slow and pleasant for a lot of drama-seekers. There are nasty comments and put-downs in every anime forum ever, but slowly they fade away as the moaners get bored and leave. I see nothing original in this show so far, and neither do I expect to. It’s just incredibly soothing and well executed.

First episodes are kinda too little to critique and anime from.

The hype and the first episode at least made me binge the manga and after finishing what's available incan see why it's highly regarded.

Where this shines is in its side characters and no-toxic-drama storyline. It's wholesome through and through and side characters get as much attention as the main characters.

I used to have a prejudice along the lines of your friends. The first episode was better than what I expected. I do not think one episode is enough to judge it critically (may be manga readers can do that).

The issue that bothered me the most, is the first episode has way too much progress in their relationship compared to how little exposure their individual characters go. It could be my preference that I want romance characters to be individually developed prior to romantic development.

Also I think the harrasment scene was unnecessary. The MC's character can be justified by so many other ways than this.

(I have not read the manga, anime
)i will say the issue is the character of waguri is "too pure to be true" for a character she seems to lack flaws. It is the same problem as people have with overpowered protagonists(i.e. jinwoo). Personally I don't have any problem with such character only thing being I can't really imagine any modern day girl like her. to put it into contrast, mahiru from angel next door is also a "perfect" girl in the story but it starts her introduction showcasing her "flaw" i.e. she being sad due to her family problems.

It's too cliche without being funny, that only works well as a romcom.

kaoruko does have flaws. People should stop jumping to conclusions in 1 episode.

this show is all about character development, it takes time to write good characters. not just 1 episode.

I never thought of it as overhyped, since Im not enthusiastic about new releases, however fanbase is indeed the biggest that I encountered.

I believe that people who don't particularly like slow romances, like this or blue box, will simply continue to discourage themselves from watching it as the story progresses.

However Im just spewing my thoughts here out of boredom, so don't come at me or anything.

As a manga reader, you can blame it on the source readers for hyping it tf up.

So forgotten childhood friends or involved in some big not-so-good incident? Something back when Rintaro was in middle/grade school and had black hair? I don't mind spoilers tho.

But that wasn't my point. The first episode introduced the circumstances not the characters. It mostly ran on "looks vs. nature" contrast. Of course I expect it will have more development in the future exploring the characters' past and present. But the it didn't give enough information to justify the subtext it showed.

After watching episode 2 my thoughts so far are that the entire premise is complete copy and past, the main characters interactions feel uncanny and unatural and the scenes only work out cause the characters are "good/kind-hearted".

Which leads me to why your friends might think the anime is cringe and something that bothered me aswell. The characters are genuinely just comically pure kind-hearted souls the type of people who wouldn't hurt a fly in the most literal sense, and that's cringe because they're just so unrealistically kind and pure.

Honestly baffling that people like the first 2 episodes when the main standout was just overly romanticized pureness aside from that everythings been very predictable so far since the author just forces every cliche romantic development down our throats.

Manga is top tier for romance genre. Anime basically follow manga very well. I am enjoying it. (Even though I am never a fans of romance)

I like the idea of it, but im really bothered by their height difference, im fine with it usually but here its just too big of a difference, she looks like a child and its being acknowledged in the anime too, and she is acts too "pure"? and childlike so it kinda irks me (i dont hate her at all, im just upset about the author making everything this way)

How the hell can people say it's "overhyped" when nobody was talking before it came out?

I mean... if you've watched a lot of romance anime, this beginning is incredibly cliché and quite cringe-worthy. A sweet, almost angelically kind and good girl, a seemingly scary boy, different schools, and the problems that come with it. It's the most typical plot possible. Plus, weak dialogue and characters. If you are older or have been into anime for a while, such series no longer impress you because they are simply average and repetitive.

I hope none the people that judge it after only one or two episodes are One Piece or Dragonball fan or fan of another long-running anime, because that would be .hypocrisy

The animation, voice acting and character deigns are all top tier, and the adaptation is faithful to the source material, it's just that the plot has a bad hook that is better portrayed in the manga

I feel like it was a little too faithful to the manga, but since it was displayed on a different medium, it doesn't encapsulate the same vibes as the manga did

I don't wanna discredit the hard work the animators put into this anime but I recommend the manga instead

@Vietard maybe, some people just like pure, innocent romance without toxic chatacters who make drama out of everything. In this show the characters seriously talk it out if something happens. Like real people would do. Or should do.

It also has the most stunning facial expressions in manga history.

The first 2 episodes basicaly made me smile for the entire time.
Its just great.

@Jollyne7 im 40 and watched a million animes and it still impresses me. The manga was one of the best reads i ever had. Nothing ever made me smile in satisfaction that hard and that often before

The MC is a loser who doesn't hit back when beaten.
I am just so tired of the benevolent stupid anime MCs, they are everywhere.
