older kayoukyoku new music songs appearing in this anime was definitely one of the things I was not expecting to witness from this anime at all, was a real surprise hearing Shizuka Kudo on the first episode I almost thought like they were gonna have a cover of it or something ahahah
haven't gotten to episode 2 and 3 yet but really surprising to see even KAORI and Kyoko Kosaka in this anime too, they're not particularly common knowledge type of artists that most would know and you'd need to do some digging to find out about them but the songs used are pretty well known to many Japanese people of the older generation, Kyoko's "Omoide Makura" being a bit more famous given just how many covers of the song there are in Japan but will be especially interesting to see which songs make it into this anime as well as the time frame because seeing Kyoko Kosaka there, defeats the guestimation of songs used being in the latter 80's (as well as the guess of songs being Pony Canyon released only) as now you can guess that they will use something between 1975-1989
(lol I just remembered I actually own all of Kyoko Kosaka's 6 studio albums too on LP, her 2nd album also containing the famous "Omoide Makura")
first you got an aidoru song, then new music rock, and after kayoukyoku folk so there is a varied mix of genres displayed tho I imagine like in the first episode they use parts of the lyrics to work well with the context of the episode too
I'm going to make a very big guess that Kahoru Kohiruimaki (just realized the amount of K letter names in all of this) "Hold On Me" (1987) will be one of the songs in the bar, it just somewhat feels perfect for it and is probably her most well known song (aside from "City Hunter~Ai yo Kienaide~" obviously well known too from its anime) so if it's not there I will be sad but am excited to find out what there will be
I'm actually getting the excitement I had with Snack Basue all over again because over there each episode they covered an older Japanese song too each episode, funny too considering that one was exactly last year as well in the Winter 2024 season!
Edit: adding ep.3's one as a youtube embed for easier previewing
No need to even research/investigate which song was used for Episode 5: "Mayonaka no Door~Stay With Me" by Miki Matsubara (1979(single)/1980(album)) lolololol
that wraps up all of the insert songs used in this anime, funny that the later we go into this series, the more tied down to kayoukyoku the insert songs at the bar have become, a bit of a shame my earlier guess didn't make it but still ahahhahah tho makes sense with the following insight
the lineup of insert songs are definitely considered specifically because Pony Canyon is the company this anime goes towards for music related stuff (OP/ED/OST) and when you compare all the songs despite some of the labels being different names so not as obvious:
ep.2 Kaori Kawamura with See・Saw
ep.3 Kosaka Akiko with Aard-Vark
ep.4 Elephant Kashimashi with Faithful.
ep.5 Miki Matsubara with See・Saw
ep.6 Hako Yamasaki with Elec Records (later would go to F-Label)
ep.9 Ryuun Nagai with F-Label
ep.11 Midori Kinouchi with Nav Records
-there is one thing in common, all of them sublabels are actually part of Pony Canyon (just "Canyon" in the past before they changed to "Pony Canyon" in 1987) so in a way this anime was like Pony Canyon shilling their archive of music 😂
out of all the songs and artists........there are only 3 I know and listened to a fair lot before; 7 I've heard in name but not really gone through their discographies yet; and 2 I have never heard of before
definitely check out their discographies as there are a lot of hidden gems outside these songs, the Japanese record labels in the last few years have been pretty kind and distributed a lot of older music onto digital streaming nowadays, back in 2021 when I had "Kayo Wave Plus" up on YouTube (currently putting an archive back up as the og channel is temporarily gone until 2030 due to a different channel with the email) a lot of said old songs were not even on streaming so was rarer to come across in full so I guess thanks Pony Canyon and other labels 😂
(heck even Naoko Ken's albums for example were insane hard to find on the web so I was surprised seeing her discography up on streaming!)
it was a fun journey to go through all of this with anticipation each week of which artist and songs will come next but hope a similar journey can be taken in the future with other series <3
